CATALOG DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:

Designed to familiarize students with the component= s of the travel and tourism industry and the economic impact on domestic and international destination areas. This course also reviews career opportunities.

COURSE PURPOSE:

This course gives students considering a career in t= ravel and tourism an overview of the industry as a whole as well as specific segm= ents that include accommodations, transportation, meetings and conventions, busi= ness travel, destination, travel agency management, tour operations, and marketi= ng.

EXPECTED COURSE OUTCOMES:

After completion of this course, the student will:

= 1. recognize and understand the roles played by the various components of the travel and tourism industry,

2.&n= bsp; be acquainted with the various career opportunities in the field of travel and tourism,

= 3. have general knowledge of the social, environmental and economic impacts the tou= rism industry exerts on society,

4. be able to use travel and tourism distributors to pl= an personal or business travel.

INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES:

The expected course outcomes should be realized thr= ough a variety of instructional strategies to complement the students’ life experiences. ASSIGNMENT DUE DATES:

The homework for this class will be completed by stu= dents using the computer program “Blackboard”. There will be at least one homework assignment given for each chapter presented. The value will be listed at the top of each assignment. Each assignment will be posted on Blackboard for a specified time period. After the designated time period h= as expired, students are no longer eligible to complete the assignment. NO EXCEPTIONS=

There will be six “discussions” in this class. Students will be given= a topic with directions for discussing topic and will have 5 days to participate. There will be no points given to students who add comments after the due date.

BLACKBOARD:

Information will be posted on a regular basis. It is suggested that students log in to blackboard no less than three times per week. Instructor wi= ll grade discussion assignments and exams.&nb= sp; Students who wish to challenge a grade have 72 hours after the grades are posted to do so. For exam= ple, grades are posted for discussion 1. You notice that you received a “0” for the discussion, y= et you participated in the discussion before the “end” time.. You must ask about that discussion assignment (by email) within 72 hours of the time the grade is posted in yo= ur Bb account. If you have quest= ions about this policy, please let me know.

Grades will be based upon formal written examinations, periodic quizzes, homework assignments, and meaningful class discussion/participation.

If you drop afte= r this date, you will receive the grade you have earned up to the drop date. The grade of “W” will = be assigned if your grade is a “D” or higher; and an “F̶= 1; will be assigned if you are not passing the course.
