CATALOG DESCRIPTIO= N OF COURSE:

Designed = to familiarize students with the components of the travel and tourism industry= and the economic impact on domestic and international destination areas. This course also reviews career opportunities.

COURSE PURPOSE:=

This cours= e gives students considering a career in travel and tourism an overview of the indu= stry as a whole as well as specific segments that include accommodations, transportation, meetings and conventions, business travel, destination, tra= vel agency management, tour operations, and marketing.

EXPECTED COURSE OUTCOMES:

After completion of this course, the student will:

1. re= cognize and understand the roles played by the various components of the travel and tourism industry,

2. be acquainted with= the various career opportunities in the field of travel and tourism,=

3. ha= ve general knowledge of the social, environmental and economic impacts the tou= rism industry exerts on society,

4. be able to use travel and tourism distributors to plan personal or business travel.

The expec= ted course outcomes will be realized through a variety of instructional strateg= ies to complement the students’ life experiences. Those strategies include, but are = not limited to the following: lecture, discussion, group activities (including = the use of structured controversy), and inquiry. The instructor will integrate appropriate multi-media technology for the purpose of enriching the students’ total experience. Students are required to use Blackboard for homework assignments.

S= TUDENT PERFORMANCE ACTIVITIES: (Attendance/Punctuality)

Regular at= tendance is required. Failure to attend class will affect the grade. = ALL absences will naturally reflect in the grade due to the quality of work and material missed. A student= is allowed to miss 3 class periods (one week) without penalty. Extreme emergency situations m= ay be excused at the discretion of the instructor. Beginning with the fourth= class missed, one percentage point will be deducted from the student’s final grade for every additional class period missed. If a student has a 90% and misses = four class periods, the student will receive an 89%. Excessive absences for any reason (considered to be ¼ of the semester - 12 or = more absences will result in automatic failure for the semester.

This is a = college level course. The following situations are NOT acceptable behaviors in this class. There is an expectation that you w= ill not work on homework for any class, send text messages, study for ot= her classes, read the newspaper or mingle with classmates during the 50 minutes allotted to this class. You w= ill be asked to turn your cell phones OFF, unless you have discussed an emergency = with me PRIOR to the start of a class session.

ASSIGNMENT DUE DAT= ES:

The majori= ty of homework for this class will be completed by students using the computer program “Blackboard”. There will be at least one homework assignment given for each chapter presented in class. The value= will be listed at the top of each assignment. Each assignment will be posted on Blackboard for a specified time period. After the designated time period h= as expired, students are no longer eligible to complete the assignment. NO EXCEPTIONS=

SOFTWARE

All documents must be submitted in MS Word.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> Exams, assignments, etc. submitted= in other formats will NOT be accepted. PLAN AHEAD, THERE WILL BE N= O ACCEPTIONS. It is your responsibility to learn= how to convert other programs to MS Word. MS WORKS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

Handwritten assignments will have a 50% deduction. For example, if an assignment is worth 20 points and you have earned all 20 points, there will= be a 10-point deduction for turning in a non word-processed document.

****All documents submitted must be in Times= New Roman 12 point font. There wi= ll be deductions for students who turn in items not in this format.

BLACKBOARD:

Information will be posted on a regular basis. It is suggested that students log in to blackboard no less than three times per week. Instructor wi= ll grade assignments and exams. Students who wish to challenge a grade have 72 hours after the grades are posted to do so. For exam= ple, grades are posted for assignment 1. You notice that you received a “0” for the assignment, y= et you turned in the assignment to me during class. You must ask about that assignment= (by email) within 72 hours of the time the grade is posted in your Bb account.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> If you have questions about this p= olicy, please let me know.

Grades will be based upon formal written examinations, periodic quizzes, homework assignments, and meaningful class discussion/participation.

Homework Assignments (points vary per assignment)

Classroom Assignments. Students will assignments that will be the catalyst for classroom discussion. Due dates are posted. Topics will be announ= ced in class. There will be NO credit given to students who are not in attendance when assignment is discussed.

Written Examinations (100 points per examination)

1. = Wr= itten examinations will constitute the formal written evaluation instruments used= in this course. Exams are not cumulative.

2. = Pe= rformance on examinations, quizzes and assignments will be based on the grade values = as indicated below:

90-100 =3D A &nbs= p; &= nbsp; 60-69 =3D D

3. = The final examination will be due on Monday, May 1 at 11:00 in room BT 121. Students MUST be present to turn in exams. Exams e-mailed to me, given to ano= ther student to turn in, put in my college mailbox or dropped off at my office at any time will not be accepted.=

4. = St= udents are advised that the last date during the semester when they may drop a cou= rse with an automatic “W” = will be Friday, April 7. If you drop after this date, y= ou will receive the grade you have earned up to the drop date. The grade of “W” will = be assigned if your grade is a “D” or higher; and an “F̶= 1; will be assigned if you are not passing the course.

5. = Reading assignments are to be completed before the topics are covered in class. You will be given time in class to raise questions and are urged to participate in discussions. Y= ou should also take notes as substantiating or new material is presented in lectures.
