By looking at Judy Vance, one might think she is just a normal NSU student. Actually that’s quite the contrary.
In 1993, Judy, her mother, Reina, and her sister, Nelly, came from El Salvador for better opportunities. Her mother worked very hard cleaning houses for many years so Judy and her sister could go to school in the United States.
When Vance first got to the United States, she didn’t know any English. She began to take speech at a local school to learn the language. By the time she reached college no one could tell that she was from a different country.
Vance came to love animals. She began to volunteer at the Tenkiller Animal Shelter. Ever since Judy was a little girl she dreamed of being a veterinarian, or a nurse.
“I’ve always wanted to help people, that’s why I decided to pick nursing as my career. I also think it’s a very noble profession,” said Vance.
Since Vance has been in college she has made many achievements.
“I started working at Dollar-Thrifty when I started my freshman year in 2004 and I’m still there today.”
Vance is also a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha, which she joined her freshman year also.
Vance is dating Jay Hubbell, a sophomore from Okmulgee and a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon.
“Judy cares about everything and everyone. She is the most generous and hard-working person I have ever met. She is also smart and goal oriented,” said Hubbell.
Vance said Hubbell helps her achieve more of her goals.
“Jay and I have been together for a year and a half. If it weren’t for him pushing me to do my best then I wouldn’t work as hard as I do,” said Vance.
Vance plans to be in college for a while to get her nursing degree, possibly moving to Norman to finish her education.
“When I’m done here at NSU I plan to continue my education at another school, it will take a couple of years, but it will be worth it to follow my dreams,” said Vance.
