Another student that has traveled many miles and works hard for her college degree is 22-year-old senior Melinda Magyar. She is originally from Hungary and came to this country when she was only 11 years old. She first moved to Haynesville, a town next to Shreveport, La. When she first came to this country, all that came to her mind was culture shock. Her mother, step-father, brother and sister are all that came with her to the new country. All her other family is still in Hungary. Part of the culture shock she received when she got here was due to the fact that she didn’t know any English.
“English was my fourth language to learn, and I can say with certainty that it was the hardest language to learn,” said Magyar.
When asked what she thought of living here, she had a tough time answering the question.
“It’s a good country, people don’t realize how many opportunities, they have here,” said Magyar.
She is planning to graduate in May with a degree in mental psychology and a B average.
After graduation she plans on moving out of the state but not out of the country.
“I want to stay in the United States, but I want to get out of Oklahoma and make a difference,” said Magyar.
