The RiverHawks women’s basketball team will look to extend its season Wednesday when the Lone Star Conference Tournament tips off in Bartlesville.
The team comes into the tournament at 16-11 on the season after two consecutive road victories and having won seven out of their last ten games. They earned a share of the LSC North Division title with Central Oklahoma University but will be the No. 2 seed because UCO had a better record against the LSC South Division.
“It was a good sign to win the last two road games,” said Randy Gipson, women’s head coach. “We’ve played solid basketball the last few weekends.”
The RiverHawks first opponent is the No.3 team from the South, Angelo State, who finished the season at 22-7. The RiverHawks will look to avenge a 63-41 loss to Angelo State on the road Dec. 1.
“They’re a team that beat us soundly down there,” said Gipson. “We didn’t play well so we will have plenty of motivation. It’s going to be a challenge but a challenge we’re looking forward to.”
A key for the RiverHawks will be to slow down Angelo State freshman guard Camille Perkins, who comes into the game seventh in the conference in scoring at 17 points per game, as well as seventh in steals at nearly two per game. She is also one of the most efficient free throw shooters in the conference at 80 percent.
If the RiverHawks can get past the ‘Belles the road doesn’t get any easier as they would face the winner of Southeastern Oklahoma State and West Texas A&M.
The RiverHawks lost in overtime to No.16 West Texas A&M and split its two games against SEOSU.
The other teams in the field are Texas A&M-Commerce, Abilene Christian, Tarleton State and Central Oklahoma.
“All the teams got here on merit,” said Gipson. “It’s going to be a very competitive field. It promises to give the Bartlesville community some solid basketball.”
The RiverHawks begin their quest for a conference title Thursday. The contest between the RiverHawks and Angelo State is set to start at 6 p.m. at the Bruin Field House.
“We’re excited about it being hosted for the first time in Bartlesville,” said Gipson
