Smoke fills lobby in South Leoser

Smoke filled the lobby of South Leoser and the hall leading up to Pizza Hut. Students were evacuated after a bearing came loose in an HVAC unit.  The motor over heated and started to smoke. The smoke was pushed through the vents by the unit. Chief Clint Vernon of the NSU police department said there was never a fire, just smoke.
There was a lot of smoke but everything was fine.
“Smoke and lots of noise, but everything is OK,” said Wes Wheeler, South Leoser hall manager.
The Physical Plant will fix the motor.
“We are replacing the bearing and belt of the motor,” said Beth Parris, secretary of the Physical Plant.
Students had to evacuate the building. Housing followed the standard operating procedures in response to the fire alarm to ensure it was the HVAC unit and not a fire, said Tammy Willis, housing hall manager.

“There was no fire. Some bearings in a HVAC system seized up and there was some smoke,” said Willis. “Students did a good job of evacuating the building and we greatly appreciate they’re cooperation so we could return them to a safe environment.”
