Each year NSU awards many scholarships based on merit, talent, and financial need. The NSU scholarship programs are extensive and offer many competitive awards. For information on scholarship programs please refer to the NSU catalog.

Listed in the NSU catalog are foundation scholarships. These scholarships require the same application procedure as all other scholarships. Application forms can be obtained on-line, by clicking here, or by contacting the NSU Scholarship Office through Student Financial Services. Application deadline is March 1, each academic year. Foundation scholarships which are specific for social work students include the following.

Nancy Ward Scholarship: Applicant must:

  • Be of Cherokee heritage
  • Be a Social Work major
  • Have a 3.0 or better GPA cumulative at time of application
  • Preference will be given to applicants that demonstrate that they are descendants of Nancy Ward

Joy Blakemore Scholarship: Applicant must:

  • Be a Social Work major
  • Be a non-traditional student, 25 years old or older, female, who is a full-time student
  • Be classified as a senior during the fall semester of the award
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 and 3.0 in the major

Sara Brown Scholarship: Applicant must:

  • Be a senior during the year they receive the award
  • Be a Social Work major
  • Have demonstrated success in academics and community involvement

Child Welfare Professional Enhancement Program: Eligible applicants must:

  • Be accepted into the social work major
  • Have and retain a cummulative 2.5 GPA
  • Be a junior or senior at the time funding is received
  • Have an interest in pursuing a career in child welfare

The CWPEP is funded by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, Children and Family Services Division, through Title IV-E of the Social Security Act. The goal of the program is to recruit professionally-trained BSW graduates into the field of public child welfare.

Students accepted into the program are required to take some child welfare-related classes and to do their field placement in a public child welfare (DHS) office. Students also attend the OKDHS CORE training. Upon graduation with a BSW, social worker graduates are employed as Child Welfare Specialist.

During the academic year, students receive monthly stipends or payment of tuition,am certain fees, and required textbooks. To receive these funds, students sign a a legally binding contract that has an employment commitment of one calendar year for each academic year of financial assistance.

Please follow the first sentence of the last paragraph with: If you are accepted into this program, you will receive an award amount of $2,925.00 for the fall and spring semesters for a total of $5,850.00 per academic year.
