"A Pleasant Walk, A Pleasant Talk"

Essays on the Conference Theme

Beaches are liminal spaces, tending to carry our thoughts from where we are to some other place. Often, as in Henry David Thoreau, Matthew Arnold, or T. S. Eliot, beach thoughts are somber; at other times, such as in Lewis Carroll's Through the LookingGlass , less so. It is from Carroll's "The Walrus and the Carpenter" that we take our 2004 convention theme. From the ancient Peripatetic philosophers (who walked in the Lyceum as they philosophized) to Thoreau (who said, "My life is like a stroll upon the beach"), activity of feet and mind are often linked. The 2004 convention committee invites you to submit essays that address our convention theme, "A Pleasant Walk, A Pleasant Talk."

Panel Proposals

We also encourage you to consider proposing or participating in a panel. Panel

participants many be from one or several different colleges and universities. Panels may or may not address the convention theme. The 2003 convention took its theme, "Ourselves Reflected," from Virginia Woolf . Some of the panels ("Ourselves Reflected through Service," "Alternative Assessment Strategies for Reflective Learning in Literature Courses") took their inspiration from the convention theme. Others ("Smoke and Mirrors: Demystifying Women Writing Women," "Student Teaching: Student or Teacher?") did not.

"0 Oysters, come and walk with us!" The Walrus did beseech. "A pleasant walk, a pleasant talk, Along the briny beach." "The Walrus and the Carpenter," stanza 6

Both in the writing to prepare for Daytona Beach and at our convention, walk and talk with other Deltans . Be somber or a bit silly, both collaborative and creative. Above all, be open to the thoughts this place and this convention inspire.

Please check the Call for Papers at <www.english.org> for complete guidelines for submissions.
