ASSE/SEMA Student Section
Northeastern State University’s
ASSE Student Section was established in the spring of 2004. Our student section of ASSE conjoined
with another pre-existing organization on the NSU campus, the Safety and Environmental
Management Association (SEMA). SEMA
was founded here at NSU during the 1995-1996 school year,
beginning with approximately fifteen members.
The
underlying principles of our school’s safety and environmental
organization parallel those of the American Society of Safety Engineers in many
ways. Collectively, we participate in safety and environmental conscious
activities in our community.
Together our organizations can contribute more time, energy, creativity,
and effort for community service, research activities, and fundraising. Professional enhancement activities,
such as guest speakers, of both the safety and environmental specialties allow
our student section members to see the broader scope of industry related
issues.
When ASSE was
introduced four years ago, student and faculty memberships totaled
sixteen. This year, our student
chapter possesses thirty-nine ASSE
memberships, and has incorporated students from the Broken
Arrow and Muskogee
campuses into the mix. After the
installation of our student chapter, many SEMA members decided it was in their
best interest to participate in both SEMA and ASSE. We do not require members of either
organization, SEMA or ASSE, to pay dues for both organizations. It has been the
students’ decision as to what membership(s) they wish to possess. With
only five students being solely SEMA
members, it is evident that our ASSE student membership has grown, and will
continue to grow with the realization of the many benefits surrounding ASSE
membership.
