Mission Statement/Description of the program
The ECU speech and debate program extends the communication curriculum in ways
classroom experiences cannot replicate. Our program is open to all students
regardless of their level of previous experience or achievement, because we
feel that everyone can benefit from the educational opportunities provided by
competitive speech and debate activities. The goal of our program is learning; what our students win through competition (in addition to trophies and plaques) are lessons they can apply throughout their lives.

Types of activities your program does We travel to tournaments so we can compete in debate and individual events. We host the annual state tournament for Oklahoma colleges and universities. We participate in ECU's annual interscholastic meet. We also participate in a
variety of college and departmental activities. We provide service and leadership for other forensics professionals and organizations.

Scholarship Availability and terms
The A. Linscheid and D.J. Nabors scholarships are awarded annually to students
active in the speech and debate program. Through the of Communication Department our Board of Regents also awards fee waiver grants to students who meet minimal GPA and program activity standards. All awards are based on the applicant's level of participation (not level of success), working relationship with faculty and peers, and educational achievement. The university president is kind enough to waive a portion of out-of-state tuition for program
participants.

Brief description of the school is a mostly-undergraduate university of about
4000 students located in Ada, OK (population c. 16,000). We offer 39 degree
programs. The Communication Department offers study in Speech Communication,
Theatre, Speech Education, Electronic & Print Media and Advertising/Public
Relations. Our department, like the university, is experiencing a major upgrade
in facilities and technology. We have a small Macintosh compatible computer lab
(with a few Windows units) which is connected to the ethernet via T-1
connection through the school server. Our two-year old library is one of the
most heavily used academic libraries in the state, and is connected to
thousands of libraries throughout the nation.
