Syllabus (Part II)

9. Evaluation:
Exams and quizzes may be spread out over multiple days. For instance, a hands-on portion of an exam maybe given during one class and a written portion of the same exam maybe given during the following class. Additional details on the format of exams, quizzes, projects, and presentations will be given out during the semester. Grades are awarded on a total earned basis as a percentage of possible points for the semester. Letter grades are assigned at the end of the semester based on the following scale where X denotes your average.

        Your Percentage     Grade
(X >= 90%) A
(X >= 80%) AND (X < 90%) B
(X >= 70%) AND (X < 80%) C
(X >= 60%) AND (X < 70%) D
(X < 60%) F

If any extra credit points will be awarded, the entire class will be notified and all students will be able to participate.

Students should keep all materials returned by the instructor until the final grade has been received from Admissions and Records. Possessing the returned materials will facilitate identifying and correcting grading and/or recording errors.

10. Make-Ups and Late Work:
A. Quizzes
Quizzes cannot be made up once administered in class. However, for University-approved absences, comparable work can be completed in advance to obtain the points that will be missed during classroom quizzes. It is the student's responsibility to contact the instructor prior to the event to make arrangements. Arrangements should typically be made two to three classes before the planned absence. Bring a copy of the class textbook when seeing the instructor about making up quizzes in advance.

During classes with lab-based quizzes, the instructor may take off late points for any student arriving over 5 minutes late. This policy is designed to help (1) avoid classroom interruptions, and (2) keep the class on pace by eliminating the need for the instructor to repeat information multiple times.

B. In Class Exams
If the instructor is notified in writing BEFORE ADMINISTERED IN CLASS, exams can be made up for any University-approved activity. A typewritten letter must be submitted before the date of absence containing the following information: (1) your name, (2) course, (3) planned date of absence, and (4) a brief description of the event or activity. (Phone calls and e-mail messages are not acceptable). The student has one week to make up the exam after it has been administered in class. It is the student's responsibility to arrange an acceptable time.

If the instructor is notified AFTER ADMINISTERED IN CLASS, exams can only be made up at the discretion of the instructor. Depending on the circumstances, the instructor may (1) decline the request to make up an exam, (2) accept the request and allow the student to make up the exam for full credit, or (3) accept the request and allow the student to make up the exam for partial credit. If the absence is accepted for either partial or full credit, the student has one week to make up the exam after it has been administered in class. It is the student's responsibility to arrange an acceptable time.

Late work on any take-home portion of an exam will be evaluated as described in the following section "All Other Work".

C. All other work
This includes papers, projects, assignments, and any take-home portion of an exam. If you plan on missing a class, you can submit this work in advance to avoid loosing points. Otherwise, late work will be accepted according to the following schedule.
  • Up to 1 week late - 75% of full credit
  • Up to 2 weeks late - 50% of full credit
  • Over 2 weeks late - NO CREDIT
  • After the last day of regular class - NO CREDIT

11. Academic Dishonesty:
The following policy has been designed to help ensure (1) students learn the material, and (2) a fair environment is created for all students.

Academic Dishonesty includes (among other things) copying another individual's work (or allowing someone to copy your work), or plagiarizing someone else's work as your own. If any type of academic dishonesty is detected (including any violations of the list below) students will be subject to disciplinary action including reduction of a grade(s), expulsion from the class, or expulsion from the university as outlined in the Northeastern State University Catalog.

A. Plagiarism:
"Copying a sentence, or a significant part of a sentence that has been written by someone other than the person submitting the paper, and then neglecting to indicate through the use of quotation marks or blocking that the material has been copied; or copying from another writer in such a way as to change one or two words in the sentence, or rearranging the order of the wording, or paraphrasing, or summarizing information and then neglecting to furnish documentation; or any failure to cite sources when appropriate." [Source: http://www.bcc.cc.nc.us/honesty.html]

Example:
    Original Work:
"Joining search terms with the AND operator tells the search engine that only documents containing all the terms should be returned. For example (heart AND transplant) finds documents with both the word heart and the word transplant."

    Violation of Plagiarism
"Combining search terms with the AND operator informs the search engine that only documents containing all the terms should be returned. For example (heart AND transplant) returns documents with both the word heart and the word transplant."

    Acceptable
When using the AND operator in a search engine, only documents containing all of the specified words or phrases are returned. For example (peanut AND butter) only returns documents containing both words.

B. Written Evaluations (Exams and quizzes)
  • Written evaluations are always closed book/closed notes.
  • Everything must be off the desk.
  • Calculators are not allowed.
  • For lab-based classes, all applications on the computer must be minimized or closed.
  • Talking or giving assistance to someone else during a written evaluation is considered academic dishonesty.
  • Using cheat sheets (or programmed information) is considered academic dishonesty.
  • The written exams are property of the instructor. Deliberately leaving the classroom with a written exam or photocopying any portion of a written exam is considered academic dishonesty.

C. All other work (including the hands-on portion of exams).
All other work falls under the Individual Work category below unless (1) the assignment clearly states that it is a Group Project and (2) the instructor has divided the class into groups.

Group Projects
Special instructions will be provided.

Individual Work
  • You may use the textbook and any notes.
  • It is acceptable to give or receive help. Watching someone else do your work is not considered help.
  • Occasionally when doing IN-CLASS computer work, there may not exist enough working machines in the lab for every student to work individually. In these rare cases, students may be asked to work together. This is a temporary situation that ends when that class is over.
  • When doing OUT-OF-CLASS computer work, it is your responsibility to find a free machine. The argument that only one machine was available will not be accepted as a justification for two or more people working together on the same computer.
  • If you need help, the instructor will be glad to assist you.
  • Any and all materials turned in for credit should be the result of your own individual effort.

12. Miscellaneous:

13. Student Evaluation of Course and Instructor:
Near the conclusion of the course, each student will be given the NSU evaluation form, which provides for suggestions for improvement of the course and instructor.

14. ADA Compliance:
If any member of the class feels that he/she has a disability and needs special accommodations, please advise the instructor of such disability at the first class attended.
