Josh Lee Service Award
This award was created in 1965
and changed in 1987 to Outstanding Service Award. The award was changed again
in 1988 to the Josh Lee Service Award. This award is named for the Oklahoma
teacher/statesman - college debating champion, Professor of Speech at O.U., U.S
Representative, U.S. Senator, and Civil Aeronautics Board. Josh Lee was head of
the Speech Department at O.U. His
book, Public Speaking Manual, which also included theatre, served as the text
for many speech/drama teachers in the state for many years. The award is given
for career contributions to speech, theatre, and communication in Oklahoma.

Originally limited to no more
than 5 years teaching in the discipline. Later changed to no more than 7 years.
In 1979 changed to Outstanding______________ Teacher, at the level of the
recipient. Recipient need not be a member of the organization. Established in
1958 but criteria not defined until 1964. In 1987 the award was divided into
two awards: Outstanding Young High School Teacher and Outstanding Young College
Teacher.

The Outstanding College
Theatre Educator Award was established in 1987 in honor of Ruth Arrington, a
long-time theatre professor at Northeastern State University. She also started
the Native American Studies program at NSU.

The Outstanding College
Communication Educator was established in 1987. The award became the Fred
Tewell Outstanding College Educator Award in 1993. Fred Tewell was a longtime
OSU professor in the Communication Department who taught speech and coached
debate for 25 years. He was active for many years in OSTCA.

Coach Award
Established in 1987
H.B. Mitchell was a member of
the Debate Coach Hall of Fame. He coached 13 consecutive state high school
championship debate teams. He was superintendent of Seminole Schools, debate
coach at Seminole Junior College , and President of Seminole Junior College.

D.J. Nabors College Forensics Coach
Award
Established in 1989
Dr.Nabors - an Honorary
Permanent Member of OSTCA- for decades conducted a college level Speech Tournament
at East Central State. He started teaching speech at Sasakwa High School in
1927. As a participant in the Oklahoma State Teachers Conventions in 1928,
1929, 1930 he was a founder of what became our OSA. He served Pi Kappa Delta as
its national Secretary-Treasurer for a ten year period. After returning to
Oklahoma in 1937, Dr. Nabors was East CentralÕs first Communication Department
Chair and attended every speech association meeting until his retirement in 1972.
