PHILOSOPHY

I deeply believe that being educated is not knowing the answers, but knowing how to find or determine answers.   I know that all children can succeed and progress with encouragement and guidance.  Knowledge is not relegated only to school experiences.

SCIENCE SUPPLIES:

1 wire-bound spiral (70 page)

2  pencils

ART SUPPLIES:

4 oz.  bottle of white glue

1 box of 24 crayons

1 pair of scissor

1 set of markers

1 supply box which will hold all supplies/snap shut lid.

CLASS RULES

            1.       Be on time

2.       Bring supplies and homework; finish class work

3.       Keep feet, hands, and all property to yourself

4.       No putdowns or swearing

5.       Follow directions of an adult the first time given

6.       Get permission to speak

SCIENCE AND ART SCHEDULE

Science is M – Th and each F is art. Art will also be one complete week each quarter.  This way, children will be able to always do art for different seasonal holidays and long term projects.

HOMEWORK/MAKE-UP WORK

  • Homework is rarely assigned in 3rd grade and is an ‘as needed’ assignment for the 4th and 5th graders.
  • Homework is always due the following day.  If an excused absence occurs, late homework will be accepted.
  • Once a student has missed 3 consecutive days of school, contact the office (746-8720) and I will provide make-up work to be picked up after school for the missed dates.

TESTS AND QUIZZES

·        ALWAYS CHECK THE SCIENCE SPIRAL TO SEE WHEN TESTS ARE SCHEDULED.  That information is provided in advance and is in the agenda portion of the daily science notes.

·        Tests are given at the end of a chapter.  The teacher will check the tests.  The scores are ‘weighted’ and test scores are doubled.

·        Pop quizzes are given randomly (never more than one time a week). Pop quizzes are used more frequently in 4th and 5th grade.  They provide a quick spot check of student understanding and show concepts/vocabulary that they need to review.

·        Diagrams, vocabulary and key science concepts listed in the spiral will be included in the chapter test.

SCIENCE SPIRAL

  • The completion of science notes into the spiral is crucial.  If/when a student is absent; the student needs to let me know they missed science and I will get notes for them to transfer into their spiral.
  • Two (or more) times a week your child needs to review science notes.  The child should have an adult help them review the week’s material one evening for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Once material is tested, that portion of the science spiral doesn’t need to be reviewed any more.
  • 4th and 5th graders are expected to use cursive writing in the science spiral.
  • Spirals will be checked toward the end of each semester.  4th and 5th grade students may earn extra points for the Spiral grade by using small current event science news items glued/stapled/taped into the spiral.  They may come from the newspaper, children’s magazines, from web news sites, etc.  4th graders will need four items per semester and 5th graders will need five per semester.
