“The play’s the thing”:

STUDY SHAKESPEARE ON STAGE

at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival

 

Sponsor:           Northeastern State University’s College of Liberal Arts and Dept. of Languages and Literature

 

Date:                Saturday, May 31, through Saturday, June 7, 2008 (last week of Summer Intersession 2008)

 

Place:               The Oregon Shakespeare Festival in beautiful Ashland, Oregon, is the premier Shakespeare repertory company in the United States. 

 

Purpose:           Experience Shakespeare’s plays in exciting stage productions by professional actors. 

Earn 3 hours undergraduate credit in English or Theatre, or 3 hours graduate credit in English.

 

Plays:               By Shakespeare:  A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Comedy of Errors, Coriolanus, Othello

By American playwrights: Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, August Wilson’s Fences

 

Instructional activities:  Participate in class discussions before and after you see the plays.

Attend educational programs led by actors and designers with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival:

§         Backstage tour of Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s theatres

§         Prologue (pre-performance talk) for Coriolanus

§         Discussion of plays seen at festival

§         Workshop on theme, characters, and language of Shakespeare’s plays

§         Workshop on design of the current production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream

 

Group leader:  Dr. John Mercer, Professor of English at Northeastern State University-Broken Arrow, will serve as group leader and course instructor.  He has taught Shakespeare to college students for 30 years and has previously led students on a theatre tour of London.  Dr. Mercer has published articles and edited a book on the stage history of Shakespeare’s plays, and he has seen numerous Shakespearean productions in the United States, Canada, and England.  

             

Cost of trip:      Trip cost of $1018 includes the following:

ü      Round-trip airfare between Tulsa and Medford, Oregon (deduct $600 from trip cost if you wish to arrange your own transportation to Oregon)

ü      Ground transportation by van in Oregon

ü      Dormitory housing at Southern Oregon University (7 nights, double occupancy; add $133 to trip cost if you wish to have a private room)

ü      Breakfasts at Southern Oregon University (7 breakfasts; lunch and dinner on your own)

ü      Theatre tickets to all 6 plays

ü      Educational programs by actors and designers with Oregon Shakespeare Festival

 

Payments:         $118 deposit due NOW to reserve a place for you (refundable if you cancel by March 24, 2008)

                        $500 due by March 24, 2008 (nonrefundable unless another student takes your place)

                        $400 balance due by April 24, 2008 (nonrefundable)               

 

Tuition: Except in special cases, those taking the trip are expected to enroll for academic credit. 

Tuition and fees for 3 hours credit (in addition to cost of trip): 

$379.80 (undergraduate) or $464.70 (graduate)
