Description
The Oregon Shakespeare Scholarship comes from the generosity of anonymous donors who strongly believe in the educational value of the Oregon Shakespeare experience. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide financial support for one NSU undergraduate or graduate student who might not otherwise be able to participate in the course. The recipient of the scholarship will have $600 credited to his or her NSU account toward the cost of the trip.
Requirements
To apply for the scholarship you must
· Be enrolled in NSU in Spring 2010
· Have a current NSU degree plan for an undergraduate degree or plan of study for a graduate degree
· Not have previously participated in the “Study Away: Shakespeare” course
· Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
If you are the recipient of the scholarship, you must
· Enroll in and pay for the “Study Away: Shakespeare” course for undergraduate credit in English, Humanities, or Theatre, or for graduate credit in English
· Pay the additional costs of the trip not covered by the $600 scholarship

Items to Submit
Application Essay
The application essay
will be an extremely important factor in the awarding of the scholarship.
Length: Although your application essay may be of any length, the recommended length is approximately three (3) typed and double-spaced pages.
Point of view: Write the essay in the first person, using “I” to refer to yourself.
Purpose: The purpose of the essay is to demonstrate why you should be the recipient of the scholarship.
Content: The topics you discuss in your essay might include but are not limited to
Letter of Recommendation
Recommender: Ask a college or high school teacher, educational administrator, work supervisor, or other superior who knows you well to write a letter recommending you for this scholarship. Because Dr. Mercer will be involved in selecting the recipient of the scholarship, he cannot write your letter of recommendation.
Purpose and content: The recommender’s purpose is to demonstrate why you should be the recipient of this scholarship, specifically explaining how you could benefit from, what you could add to, and/or why you need financial assistance for the Oregon Shakespeare experience. In addition to the items mentioned above concerning the content of the application essay, the recommender might comment on
· Your participation in class discussions in other classes
· Your accomplishments as a student or actor
· Other reasons why you would be a worthy recipient of this scholarship
