Oregon Shakespeare Trip 2010

Date:               Saturday, May 29, through Saturday, June 5, 2010 (last week of Summer Intersession 2010)

 

Place:               The Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon, surrounded by the spectacular beauty of the Cascade Mountains, is the premier Shakespearean repertory company in the United States. 

 

Purpose:          Experience classic and contemporary plays in exciting stage productions by professional actors. 

Earn 3 hours undergraduate credit in English, Theatre, or Humanities, or 3 hours graduate credit in English (course may be taken up to 3 times over 3 years).

 

Plays you will see:

  • Four plays by Shakespeare: Hamlet; Henry IV, Part I; The Merchant of Venice; and Twelfth Night
  • Tennessee Williams’s Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
  • Janet Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, in a stage adaptation
  • Lynn Nottage’s Ruined, set in present-day Congo; winner of 2009 Pulitzer Prize for drama

Instructional activities: 

  • Participate in discussions with your peers before and after you see each play.
  • Take a backstage tour of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s three beautiful theatres.
  • Hear a pre-performance talk by a member of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival company.
  • Participate in two question-and-answer sessions with Oregon Shakespeare Festival actors.

 

Cost of trip: Trip cost of $1180 per person includes

ü  Round-trip airfare between Tulsa and Medford, Oregon (deduct $486 from trip cost if you wish to arrange your own transportation to Oregon)

ü  Ground transportation by van in Oregon (deduct $80 from trip cost if you wish to rent a car and provide all your own ground transportation in Oregon)

ü  Housing at Southern Oregon University (7 nights, double occupancy in dorm room with bath down the hall; add $140 to trip cost for single occupancy in dorm room; add $175 to trip cost for double occupancy in hotel-style room with private bath; add $448 to trip cost for single occupancy in hotel-style room with private bath)

ü  Breakfast 6 mornings at Southern Oregon University (lunch and dinner on your own)

ü  Tickets to all 7 plays, backstage tour, and educational programs led by company members

Student discount:  The first 10 students who pay the deposit of $180 and plan to take the course for credit may deduct $120 from cost of trip, reducing trip cost to $1060.

Scholarships:  Partial scholarships toward trip expenses are available.  Ask group leader for details.  

 

Payments (payable to NSU Business Office cashier after you submit Study Away Form to group leader):

$180 deposit due ASAP to reserve a place for you (refundable if you cancel by March 24, 2010)

                        $450 due by March 24, 2010 ($50 cancellation penalty unless another person takes your place)

                        $550 balance due by April 24, 2010 (nonrefundable)                       

                        Remaining balance for any additional charges (see above) due by May 14, 2010 (nonrefundable)

 

Tuition:            Students are expected to enroll for 3 hours of undergraduate or graduate credit.  Tuition and fees are in addition to cost of trip.  With permission from group leader, a limited number of non-students may take the trip without enrolling for academic credit.
