BOTANY 4213 - ETHNOBOTANY
Catalog Description:
A study of plants with emphasis on human uses. Plants important to Native Americans and other cultures will be covered. The dependence upon plants as sources of medicine, spices, essential oils, and fiber crops will be included. Lecture course. Prerequisite: Botany 1123 or permission of
instructor.
Expected Course Outcomes:
This course will help you develop an understanding of the:
1. Current theories concerning the domestication and evolution of cultivated plants.
2. Processes of plant genetic improvement
3. Major crop plants that supply calories and nutrients to the human population
4. Importance of plants in the supply and creation of medicine
5. Influence of plants on the development of human cultures
6. Use of plants in the production of fiber, essential oils, structural members, and other uses.
7. Contributions of indigenous peoples in the domestication of crop plants and the medicinal uses of plants

Student Performance Activities: (Attendance/Punctuality)
This is a lecture only course and I strongly encourage in class discussion of the topics being presented. The class meets from 4:30pm to 7:30 on Tuesdays; a single class meeting therefore represents an entire week of class.
If any member of the class feels that he/she has a disability which requires special accommodation please advise the instructor of such at the first class meeting.
In the event of inclement weather, the students should listen to the local radio or television station for information about NSU closing.
Student Evaluation:
Grades will be assigned on the following value system.
3 exams 30%
quizzes 20%
Papers 15%
Assignments 5%
Final 25%
Letter grades will be determined by the A=90% of possible system.
