Suggested Keyword/ Subject Search Terms

One of the first steps in creating a research plan is to select “key words” which best describe the topic you plan to research.

If you are unfamiliar with the terminology you may wish to refer to sources such as textbooks, dictionaries, and other reference resources in the field of study. Contact your instructor if you are unsure if a particular topic is appropriate. It is usually wise to make sure if you are on target with your topic before you begin to spend much time researching a project.

1.) Key terms to use individually and in combination with each other:                     Organic chemistry

Organic synthesis (alternate term)

Pharmacology

Pharmacol* (truncated version)

                                                                                                                        Specific topics/areas such as:

Chip-based HPLC (diagnostic system for pharmaceutical R&D)

                                                                                                                                    Column LC

                                                                                                                                    Mass spectrometry

                                                                                                                                    Synthetic polymeric drugs

                                                                                                                                    Gene synthesis

                                                                                                                                    Binary gradient systems

2.) Combine key words with Boolean operators (and, or, not).

Synthesis and biochemical

3.) Phrase terms ie: Nonbonding electrons can be searched by placing the phrase in quotation marks “Nonbonding electrons”

Interlibrary Loan Services (ILS) are used to retrieve library materials that the Northeastern State University Broken Arrow Library does not own or currently have available for circulation. ILS is a service available to all students, faculty, and staff affiliated with NSU (subject to Fair Use restrictions of sections 107 and 108 of the U.S. Copyright Law).   No fee is charged for this service.

Books

Print format books are available by searching the NSU online catalog.

Searches may be limited to just the Broken Arrow campus for convenience. Books available on the Tahlequah campus may be ordered for delivery to the Broken Arrow campus via campus mail. This service usually takes two to three days for materials to arrive.

Electronic books: Netlibrary provides access to over 40,000 academic books to NSU students 24/7.  Please note:  NSU Off Campus Users: When you get to the NetLibrary page, you must set up an account before you can use the service. If you have set up your account on campus, login to begin searching for titles.

Articles

Articles from journals may be accessed through our various online databases:

Databases by subject                           Online journals by title

Suggested Sources for Full-Text Articles:

EbscoHost: (search multiple databases simultaneously)

Medline

Cinahl Plus

            Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition

Wilson Omnifile

Science Direct

American Chemical Society Web Edition

            SciFinder

  • From off campus, don't enter these addresses directly, but rather access the databases through the library's web page (see: Getting to the databases, below). You'll be prompted to enter your NSU username and password for off-campus access.

Getting to the databases

From the Broken Arrow library's main page (http://library.nsuok.edu/nsuba/), click on Articles and Databases, then on Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

Review vs. Research Articles

It is important to distinguish between review articles and research articles. A review article’s primary purpose is not to present new research, but to summarize, analyze, discuss, and provide an overview of previously published work on a topic. A research article is designed to present new research, methods, and/or findings.

Research articles often employ the IMRAD (Introduction, Methods, Research, and Discussion) format. See http://www.uta.fi/FAST/FIN/RESEARCH/imrad.html for a more extensive treatment of this format.

Evaluation of Sources
  • Peer review
  • Wikipedia: a starting point
  • Open web vs. proprietary online databases
  • Remember to ask yourself "Who, what, when, where, why?"

Scholarly versus “Popular” Journals

General Online Reference Sources

Additional Full Text Journal Databases

            Highwire (Stanford University)  http://highwire.stanford.edu/cgi/search

HighWire hosts publications from researchers, clinicians, students, and other scholars seeking the best online research from a vast database of full-text scholarly, high-impact materials. The HighWire portal offers advanced searching and browsing capabilities and tools, creating an alternative means to find and make sense of information from over five million full-text articles; create keyword, citation or author alerts; and download citations across all the content HighWire hosts.

            ChemSpider

ChemSpider links together compound information across the web, providing free text and structure search access of millions of chemical structures.

With an abundance of additional property information, tools to upload, curate and use the data, and integration to a multitude of other online services, ChemSpider is the richest single source of structure-based chemistry information.

ChemSpider is owned by the RSC and provided as a free resource to the community.
