History 1493 (Honors), Sample Test Questions, Final

Directions: The final will consist of four questions taken from the following list. Of those four questions, students will be expected to use material from the lectures, from the textbook, and from other class assignments to answer two of the four questions as completely as possible in the allotted time.


    1.  Describe and analyze the cultural conflicts of the 1920s as they were reflected in politics and in other spheres of public life. Why did such conflicts arrise? Why were economic disputes less central to political conflict during this decade?

    2.  Explain and analyze Franklin Roosevelt's success as a politician, concentrating on elections, political rivals on the right and left, and other political developments in the period from 1932 to 1938.

    3.  How and why did the United States suport an isolationist foreign policy through much of the 1920s and early 1930s? Who were the chief supporters of isolationism and why did it eventually grow weaker among AMericans?

    4.  Describe and analyze American strategy in World War II, making sure to look at major developments in the European and Japanese theaters.

    5.  Compare and contrast American involvement in the Korean and Vietnamese wars.

    6.  How and why did the Cold War develop after World War II? Be sure to focus on the developments in Europe and the Third World.

    7.  For the period 1947 to 1965, discuss and analyze the major conflicts, developments, and achievements of the Civil Rights Movement.

    8.  Describe and analyze the political rise and fall of McCarthyism in the United States.

    9.  Describe, analyze, and evaluate at least five major New Deal programs. At least two of these programs should be from the First New Deal and at least two should be from the Second New Deal.

    10.  Explain and analyze Ronald Reagan's success as a politician, concentrating on elections, political rivals, and other political developments in the period from 1980 to 1988.
