How to Install Prime95 for the NSU Team

Windows XP

Download the Windows version of Prime95 from http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft/#newusers.

Create a folder called Prime95 in C:\Program Files.

Extract the contents of the zip file to C:\Program Files\Prime95.

Run the Prime95 program with the green icon.

Choose the option Join GIMPS.

For the User ID enter: linded

For the computer name, enter whatever name you would like to identify your computer. If you are installing it on an NSU-owned computer, set the computer name to the computer's serial number or service tag.

Set the daytime hours to match when you use your computer the most. You can let Prime95 use more memory during whatever hours you specify as "night".
Suggested memory settings for Prime95 on Windows XP
System RAM: 256 MB 512 MB 1 GB 1.5 GB 2 GB 3 GB or more
Daytime Memory: 8 MB 32 MB 64 MB 128 MB 256 MB 256 MB
Nighttime Memory: 32 MB 128 MB 512 MB 768 MB 1024 MB 2048 MB

Choose the No option here.

Click OK to accept whatever options the program gives here unless you know that you want to only do a specific work type.

The program will now receive assignments from the PrimeNet server. Note that if your computer has hyperthreading or multiple cores (which it probably will if it was made after 2005 or so) you will have multiple worker windows inside the Prime95 window.

You can now minimize the Prime95 program. It will appear as an icon in your system tray and will start automatically when you turn on your computer.

If you are setting up Prime95 on a computer with multiple users such as a lab computer, continue for directions to setup the NTPRIME program.

Download the Windows Service version of Prime95 from http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft/#newusers.

Extract the NTPRIME program into the same folder as Prime95.

Uncheck the 'Start at Bootup' option from the Options menu in Prime95.

Exit Prime95 by clicking the Test menu and choosing Exit.

Open the Command Prompt. You can find the Command Prompt on the start menu: click Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> Command Prompt.

Enter the command cd "\Program Files\Prime95"

Enter the command ntprime -install

Start the NTPRIME program with the command net start "prime service"
