Text: Elementary Number Theory, 2^nd edition, by Charles Vanden Eynden (McGraw-Hill 2001)

Catalog Course Description: Divisibility of integers; continued fractions; Diophantine equations; quadratic residues; distribution of primes; numerical functions; mathematical induction.

Prerequisite: Math 2614, Calculus I.

Testing: There will be three exams plus a final exam each worth 100 points. If the final exam grade is higher than the lowest test grade, then the lowest test grade will not be used to calculate the course grade and the final exam grade will be doubled.

Quizzes: There shall be 100 points possible from quizzes, homework, and in-class assignments. A missed assignment may not be made up. An assignment turned in one class period late shall be penalized one-half credit. An assignment turned in more than one class period late will receive no credit.

Grades: There shall be 500 points possible for the semester. Grades are to be based on percentages of this total by the scale: 90/80/70/60 for an A/B/C/D. Below 60% shall be an F.

Attendance: Regular attendance is expected. A student who misses an exam may request a make-up exam only if the absence was approved by the instructor in advance of the scheduled exam or if the exam was missed due to an officially sponsored University event.

Disability: If any member of the class feels that he/she has a disability and needs special accommodations, please advise the instructor at the first class attended.

Withdrawals: Each student will be considered to be passing the course until November 12. After that date a student who withdraws will receive either a "W" or "F" depending upon whether the student was passing or failing the course at the time of withdrawal.

Schedule: Listed below you will find the exact dates for the exams. The actual material to be covered will be announced prior to the exams.

             Exam 1: Mon Sept 13           Approx. 1.1 - 1.6

             Exam 2: Fri      Oct 8         Approx. 2.1 - 3.2

            Exam 3: Fri      Nov 12           Approx. 3.3 - 4.4

Final Exam: takes place Wednesday December 15 from 11:00 until 12:50 pm. The exam is comprehensive and shall also cover sections 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 7.1.

Weather: During times of inclement weather, decisions (by the University) concerning cancellation of classes will be made by 6:00 AM for day classes and 3:00 PM for evening classes. The following media outlets will be notified concerning closing of the campus.
