Approved by the Oklahoma Board of Regents for Higher Education as an in-house certified online program of study July 2005, participation in
the program of study is open to anyone admitted to the NSU graduate college. The WPA courses are offered on a rotation schedule with one being
offered each long semester. The certificate code on a transcript communicates to prospective employers that the student has studied and mastered
the administration and management of writing programs as well as writing instructional design and methodologies.
1. Administering Writing Programs, English 5223
A study of theoretical and practical aspects of writing program administration, the components of a good writing program, and may include
documentation and records, budgeting, evaluation, legalities and consensus-based management among other topics.
Course Objectives:
- Identify and define the academic organizational structure, parameters, and issues for a writing program.
- Understand the various issues and components of a writing program administration such as curriculum audience, design, implementation,
and assessment; special audience needs; training of instructors; political and organizational issues; and special programs such as writing
centers and writing across the curriculum programs.
- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of one or more such components.
- Distinguish between curriculum needs for basic composition courses and advanced composition courses (general audience and difficulty levels)
- Define and discuss the special audience needs of ESL and developmental English students and students with learning disabilities, thus learning
to design curriculum.
- Define and discuss appropriate graduate assistant training for teaching composition courses.
- Identify and address possible political and legal issues in writing program administration.
2. Evaluation of Writing, English 5433
Covers the evaluation and assessment of writing from both historical and current perspectives. Includes all types of assessment and explores
how writing is evaluated in disciplines other than English, thus has writing across and in the disciplines units.
Course Objectives:
- Possess an in-depth understanding of the history of writing instruction.
- Be able to design writing assignments with matching assessment methods.
- Know the characteristics for various writing assessment methods: holistic, primary trait, computer scoring, timed essay tests, portfolios,
diagnostic, and placement tests.
- Identify and discuss the advantages/disadvantages of standardized testing.
- Design and implement a writing assessment program for English departments, including exit and proficiency assessments.
- Be able to assist in designing or design writing assessment tools for disciplines engaged in WAC or WID programs.
3. Writing Center Administration, English 5323
This course is designed to teach the principles, methods, and techniques of establishing and operating a writing center. Includes budget
preparation and administration, staffing and training, hardware and software acquisition and usage.
Course Objectives:
- Understand the history of and the theory behind college writing centers.
- Identify and define the academic administrative and institutional issues related to WC operation.
- Design and plan the configuration and acquisition needs for computers and software, tables and other supplies
- Prepare and know how to administer an operating budget; develop and maintain other records for Center
- Develop and implement a management philosophy and code of ethics for
effective operation
- Recruit, hire, and train tutors and other lab personnel
- Design an effective tutor training program that serves all disciplines and provides an online tutoring approach.
- Define and discuss the special equipment, materials, and tutoring needs of ESL, developmental English students and students with learning
disabilities.
- Define and discuss appropriate graduate assistant or staff roles in the WC
- Promote use of the Center through web site, brochures, pamphlets, special programs, class room visits, etc.
- Identify and address possible political and legal issues in writing center administration.
4. Technology in English Studies, English 5483
This course is designed to teach the use of all types of technology in the English classroom in support of learning activities. Includes
discussions of computer classrooms, audio-visuals, online course development, smart boards, etc.
Course Objectives:
- Develop an in-depth understanding of sound learning theory and individual learning styles.
- Able to design instructional materials incorporating these theories supported by technology.
- Be able to design, lift, and teach an online course
- Design a computer classroom and develop curriculum appropriate for various learning styles in this environment.
- Know how to design and lift a web page.
- Be skilled in electronic research methodologies.
- Be able to utilize instructional equipment such as the ELMO, overhead, and computer projector systems, SmartBoard system, VCR/DVD, etc.
A form indicating completion of these courses for students to complete in order to receive the code on their transcript is available
below or through one of the graduate advisors.
