Social Work Conference a success

The 10th Annual Caring for Children, Caregivers and Culture Conference, cosponsored by the NSU Social Work Program and the Cherokee Nation, was held on the NSU Tahlequah campus on Friday October 8, 2004.
Dr. Larry Williams, NSU President, began the conference with a positive greeting to the 240 registrants and welcomed the participants to Tahlequah and the NSU campus.
Howard Hendrick, Director of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, delivered an informative keynote address on the future of the family and early childhood development.
Wilma Mankiller, author, activist and former chief of the Cherokee Nation presented the Lena Seitz memorial lecture and spoke very eloquently on every day being a good day, and the important role of a good mind in Native American life.
Participants also had the choice of six workshops during the morning session and five workshops in the afternoon.
A delegation of Russian professional women were special guests at the conference and presented an interactive workshop on family and children’s issues in their country.
Social Work Accreditation is extremely important to this type of work.
In Fall 2004, the Council on Social Work Education conducted a site visit for reaffirmation of accreditation of the NSU Social Work Program.
An accredited program is essential to Bachelor of Social Work students as an accredited degree is the basis of professional licensure.
We are pleased to report that the Social Work Program received a positive report from the site visit team.
