Building~ the cost is $30/year.
*We have picked a T-Shirt design, it resembles the “I Love New
York” T-shirts, but instead symbolizes “I Love Math”. The
symbols are the square root of (-1) to signify “i”, a cardioid
with its formula around it and “KME” in the middle of it to
signify the heart, and the word “Math” in Greek letters written
under the square root of (-1) and the cardioid. You can
order a shirt until October 30.
*Our next meeting will be November 30.
Chapter Meeting - August 31, 2009
Tentative
Dates for KME Meetings:
Last Monday of the month, at 3:15 p.m. (Sept.
28, Oct. 26, Nov. 30, December ???)
KME/MAA
Bulletin Board:
There is a KME/MAA bulletin board between Dr.
Bell’s and Dr. Carment’s offices. Check them frequently for
announcements.
KME Initiation:
The semi-annual KME initiation was scheduled
for Monday, October 5, 2009 at 5:00 pm at the Grand China
Restaurant, located across the highway from the city hospital. KME
invites all eligible majors to become a member. For more
information on becoming a member, see Dr. Bell in SC253, or email:
bellj@nsuok.edu or phone: 918.444.3810.
Ideas for Meetings:
We discussed possible activities for this
fall. Toni Slagle suggested we plan “Math Jeopardy” (This
could help us practice in case we take a student team to compete
at the MAA meeting in March at Siloam Springs, AR.) Dr.
Diamantopoulos announced that Dr. Underwood Dudley will be
speaking on Wednesday, October 7, at 2 p.m. in the NET Auditorium
about “Angle Trisectors.” KME will help put up signs,
etc. We would like to bring other speakers to campus, if
possible. We will work on a problem from one of the math
journals in an attempt to publish our solution. We also
talked about fund raisers. One idea is to have a book
sale. We already have several boxes of books donated by math
faculty. Everyone seemed to prefer January for the
sale. Someone suggestion we have a pie auction (since math
people like pi.)
Phone-a-thon:
NSU Student Foundation is hosting a
Phone-a-thon competition. The purpose of the competition is to
connect students to alumni and teach philanthropic principals on
the NSU campus. NSUSF asks each NSU organization to
volunteer a minimum of one night of service each semester. There
are prizes for bringing in the most money (1st $1,000, 2nd $500,
3rd $250). It will take place Sunday, September 27th -
Thursday, November 19th (S,M,Tu,Th) from 5:45 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. in
the Branscum Alumni Center (BAC). This would be a good
idea!! Please tell Dr. Bell if you can work one of these
nights.
T-Shirt:
We discussed making a KME T-shirt. Toni
Slagle knows someone who could design it for us. Several
ideas for the shirt were suggested: 1. Sine Flu occurs
periodically. 2. Mathletes are better than
Athletes. 3. , followed by the equation and graph of a
cardioid (heart), followed by KME (or MATH). Toni will
check on the cost of a regular T-shirt and also a collared
shirt. Please think of an idea for the shirt and bring it
with you to the next meeting. (If you can’t come, tell Dr.
Bell, Toni, or one of the other officers.)
The Math Association of America:
We have a recognized student chapter of the MAA
here at NSU. A membership is from September to May, and

Competition. The problems will be posted on the KME bulletin
board. A new problem will be posted every couple of
weeks. If you solve one of the problems, you will receive a
really nice certificate, signed by Dr. Linde!
NSU Student Senate:
KME chose this last year to be at the tier
level that does not require a representative to attend NSGA
(Northeastern Student Government Association). This does

students to visit the NSU campus and discover all that NSU has to
offer. Student organizations such as KME have been invited to
be a part of the activity fair from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the
U.C. Ballroom. Setup will begin at 10:00 a.m. If anybody
is interested in helping out, please contact Dr. Bell or Lindsey Box
for more information.
Every year the NSU student government organizes
a Halloween carnival for the local children. This year our

and it was titled “KME Pumpkin Patch.” Thanks to the
following students for helping out: Lindsey Box, Leticia
Stone, Jeff Smith, Felicia Lotchleas, and Carey Brashear.
Our annual Christmas party is scheduled for December 6th.
The time is still up for debate. We are considering having
it at 4:00 rather than 3:00 so that people with 3:00 classes will
be able to attend. We plan to have the party in the Library,
room 206, where Dr. Wyatt’s presentation was. We will play
games and eat pizza! We are hoping Dr. Linde will make pizza
again this year! Please see Dr. Bell or Lindsey for items
that need to be brought.

Chapter Meeting - October 6, 2004
KME had a guest speaker, Maurice Turney, who is an alumnus of NSU
and who joined the Oklahoma Alpha chapter of KME in 1945. Maurice
gave a very entertaining lecture that was enjoyed by all who
attended. He said that he earned $.35 per hour working in
the NSU bookstore. It cost only $11 per semester to attend
NSU and about $30 per month to live in Haskell Hall (and that
included food, too)!
KME voted on amending the by-laws of the Oklahoma Alpha chapter.
The motion was read the prior week at a special meeting, and
the motion was approved. We also considered the
petitions of 3 colleges who seek to form KME chapters.
