Oklahoma Area Workshop

Hello to all the readers, this is Jeremy Williams, Vice President of the Alpha Rho chapter. I am pleased to tell you about the Oklahoma Area workshop we hosted in February. It started off very early in the morning. We played the balloon popping game to get everybody awake and moving around. We then had Sam McMillen come in and helped give some examples of leadership skills. I think his example of a good, bad, and non-productive leader showed everyone what not to be like when they are trying to have a productive chapter. After a lot of fun with Sam we attended a teaching clinic taught by Steve Wiles. He showed us the methods of teaching a beginning band student. This wrapped up the first half of the day.
After the clinic we took a break for lunch. It was also Amy Joe Simmons' Birthday. We then had our individual office meetings, and passed back and forth different ideas on what works best for our individual office. The last thing of the day was a meeting for all the members. After the meetings closure everyone started to say their good byes and start their journey's home. I believe the Oklahoma Area Workshop was a success, much thanks to Aaron Moore. Everyone seemed to have a great time and hope to see every one of you soon.

AEA,
Jeremy Williams

Arkansas Area Workshop

Hello everyone, I am Randi Phelps the Historian of the Alpha Rho chapter. I am pleased to tell you about our trip to Arkansas Area Workshop on March 29, 2003. The day was rather exciting, we got lost in the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Ark. campus due to road construction and the heart walk they were having. When we arrived we received our t-shirts and they already started the game and morning opener. They were playing a very odd orange game; they had oranges in panty hose attached to their pants. And by swinging the orange they were to hit the orange on the floor to the other side, it was very humorous to watch. We, Kappa Kappa Psi broke off into groups from the Tau Beta Sigma to discuss Service Projects and Educating New Members. We broke for lunch and came back and the Director of Athletic Bands, Mr. Timothy Gunter spoke to us about having a united band. Then we had a joint meeting about Southwest District Convention.
After that we went and changed clothes for a Brotherhood/Sisterhood Ceremony and also a Kappa Kappa Psi Ritual. Then there was an awards ceremony, everyone that attended received an award, and Alpha Rho received an award for Most Members Present, a total of five of us. After the whole ordeal there were twenty of us from the workshop went out to eat at the Olive Garden in Fayetteville, Ark. We all had a great time visiting with each other and after dinner we all traveled back home for some that was a long trip it was a great day and I had a wonderful time.

Building a Library

Well its spring time and time do start a little band service. Now at NSU, our need is high and our budget is low, but we are always looking for a problem that Alpha Rho can fix. One thing we were desperately in need of is a renovation of out music library. Now those of you from small schools are probably familiar with poorly organized libraries, and ours is in pitiful condition.
This, of course, is a very large project to take on, but we have a plan. First, which we have already started, is to go through all the music and see what pieces are missing parts. The music itself, as most of you have guessed, is in those wonderful (and old) manila folders. Next we plan to get one of our alumni named Sam McMillian, who is a wood worker, to build us some shelves. Then we plan to buy some music boxes to put the music in, and label them on the edge with call numbers. Finally, we (by 'we' I mean 'Aaron Moore') plan to create a computerized card catalog database. This way our band director can search the database by name, composer, or arranger and access the music he needs.
The hardest thing about a project this big is to come up with the money. Read on in the other articles to see our new fundraisers we are planning to help pay for this.

Secretary's Report

Hi, I'm Rick Ballenger Recording Secretary for the Alpha Rho chapter. I took over this job when our last recording secretary resigned. It's been an eventful semester here at NSU, lots of things going on, biggest was Oklahoma Area Workshop. I hosted one of the breakout sessions for the secretaries and it went well, a lot was discussed about how detailed to keep your minutes, and one person brought his folder which he kept all the minutes from the year in order of meeting so as other members could see if they missed a meeting. We accomplished almost all of our projects for the year and look forward to summer and National Convention. Well that is all I have, I hope everyone has a great summer and if you are attending National, enjoy.
