15 members, 14 initiates and 2 alumni of the Alpha Rho chapter traveled from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK, to the Stillwater Station for our first National HQ Workday on September 30, 2000. Brothers cleaned “The Station” from entrance to attic, filed paperwork submitted with Chapter Personnel Reports, assisted with a large mailing, helped lay brick for the “Walkway of Distinction,” and even traveled across town to give the CFR house a workover by mowing, edging, pulling weeds and trimming hedges. Derek Mills, Kappa Kappa Psi Chapter Field Representative; Dixie Mosier-Greene, National HQ Office Manager; Dale Croston, Board of Directors of the National Alumni Association; and Lisa Croston, Tau Beta Sigma’s National Vice President for Special Projects were on hand to give the chapter guidance, and by the end of the day, we were all worn out. However, though it was hard work, the experience of working for our National Headquarters was unique and invigorating. On one hand, the effort gave our initiate class (our largest in over 50 years!) another chance to work alongside their brothers, even giving them a chance to meet three “higher-ups” in the fraternity, but the opportunity to give The Station some much needed assistance was rewarding to all the members and prospective members of our chapter. In addition to helping the Fraternity and meeting National Officers, our Brothers had an entire day to create a stronger bond within the chapter. From an event filled 2 ˝ hour drive to Stillwater, eating two meals together, and working side by side six hours, the entire chapter had a great time getting to know one another better. Before this weekend, who would have imagined our President running a weedeater or our initiates building sidewalks. The willingness of so many people to work together to better an organization that they all truly love is an inspiration to us, and this is an activity we plan to continue every year and would encourage other chapter to consider visiting “The Station” and lending a hand. |
