On Joint Relations

Let's talk about joint relations. I know some of you are thinking, "Hang on, there isn't a TBS chapter for you to joint relate to, Beej." However, Alpha Rho has been working hard this semester to improve its bonds with a music organization many of you may have on your campus as well: Phi Mu Alpha. The Alpha Rho chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi and the Xi Zeta chapter of Phi Mu Alpha held a "Getting to Know You" joint function earlier this semester where food, pop, and a little history of each chapter and organization led to an informative and enjoyable evening.
We gave our "Informal Night" presentation to the Sinfonians and showed them several items they may have passed by in the hall without much thought: our original charter, our 1979 Founders Trophy, and other more fraternally symbolic items. In fact, both chapters had a chance to take a closer look at the other's Coat of Arms, colors, and ideals that night. Stating our purposes and goals before one another cleared much of the confusion that had plagued our chapters before. As many of the Sinfonians are in the orchestra and choral ensembles, they have had little chance to see what goes on in the band program. Furthermore, many of the non-majors from the separate groups had never met before the event!
By the evening's end, both chapters left feeling better about the fraternities and their equally important role within the music department. Talks of an inter-fraternal council and plans for more joint functions were well received by all brothers. Most significantly, both the brothers of Alpha Rho and Xi Zeta have come to realize that we share common themes within our purposes. Furthermore, by working together we can successfully accomplish many of our shared goals.
