Workdays
The Alpha Rho chapter of KKY has been very busy this semester. We have a great rush class with eleven membership candidates. During fall break the brothers and membership candidates traveled to Stillwater for our 4th annual campout and National Headquarters workday. We camped out at Lake McMurtry in the same location as last year. After setting up camp, we met Clinton Wieden at the Shrine for the official KKY tour. Later that night as we got ready to go to sleep we realized that something was drastically different from all the years before…it was hot! Now I’m not talking about middle-of-the-summer-in-the-desert hot, but our campout almost always coincides with the first freeze of winter and most of us prepared for 30 degree weather by bringing sweats to sleep in. So we slept on top of our sleeping bags in our skivvies, which was the best and most comfortable solution to the unusually warm temperature. The following morning (after our “polar bear” swim) we went to work at National Headquarters. We pulled weeds, typed files, compiled mail-outs, and mowed the lawn rather creatively. After a hard day’s work we all ate at Eskimo Joe’s. Finally, we visited the cemetery before leaving Stillwater, and even though it was raining, we paid our respects by placing coins on the gravestones and singing the Hymn around Boh.
Road trips seem to be a theme for this semester. We traveled to the University of Arkansas and had an awesome time with the brothers of Lambda. They cooked spaghetti and we brought the pop. Some of the brothers visited Gamma Phi early in the semester, and we are planning to visit Epsilon Epsilon very soon.
The music library is a large and on-going serviceproject for our chapter and we recently had a workday. Alumnus Sam McMillen built shelves and some of the rothers stained them during the workday so most of the renovating is complete. The rest of the brothers began organizing an incredible amount of music. We purchased very nice music boxed and began transferring music from the old manila folders. We labeled the folders with the title, composer, and arranger and separated the folders based on whether or not they had the conductor’s score. After we finish this step, a computerized card catalog database will be created, which our band director can search to access the desired music.
In addition to all of this we are planning a new event for the alumni. Invitations have been sent to more than fifty alumni for this formal dinner. The first ever Alumni Banquet will be a great time for current brothers and alumni to come together and reconnect. There have been several alumni attending Northeastern State University football games including Dr. Lowell Lehman, Steve Wiles, Zack Hawkins, Marie Hawkins, B.J. O’Shea, Bob Asher, and of course the still very active Aaron Moore. We would like to thank the NSU Alumni Band for their donation to the fraternity.
Alpha Rho would also like everyone to know that “WE WANT THE DRUM”!!!
