Prerequisites and Other Advising Considerations:
Prerequisites are MATH 1513 (College Algebra) and MATH 1613 (Plane Trigonometry) or high school equivalent. Students can not receive credit for both this course and PHYS 2115; they should pick one or the other.
Please Note: This class is worth 5 credit hours. 4 hours will be in the same room and in a lecture format. The fifth credit hour comes from a lab section, which must also be completed before any credit for the course is received. Lab sections will be in the new Science building, room 114.
Instructional Materials:
The textbook is "College Physics" by Serway and Faughn (7th ed). [6th Edition could work.]
A calculator with minimal science functionality (trig, xy, logs) will be very helpful.
Instructional Schedule:
Test 1 Feb 6 (Wed) Chapters 1, 2, 3
Test 2 Mar 5 (Wed) Chapters 4, 5
Test 3 Apr 4 (Fri) Chapters 6, 7, 8
Test 4 Apr 29 (Tues) Chapters 9, 10, 11, [12]
Final Exam May 5 9:00 AM -11:00 AM (Mon) Comprehensive
Student Evaluation:
There will be a total of 750 points possible, broken down in the following way:
Test 1 100
Test 2 100
Test 3 100
Test 4 100
Lecture Final 150
Lab 112.5
Hwk 87.5
The final letter grade scale will be no higher than:
90% ‑ 100% = A 80% ‑ 90% = B
70% ‑ 80% = C 60% ‑ 70% = D
less than 60% = F
If you miss a test you need to contact me (phone message or email) before the next class day if at all possible. Hopefully, we can schedule a time for a makeup test, before the tests are returned to the rest of the class. There will be no make‑up tests given after the tests are returned to the class
There will also be 50 pts of extra credit. About 30 pts will come from 0.5 pt activities at the end of almost every class period and about 20 pts will come from some online activities.
The percentage on the final exam can also replace your lowest regular non-zero test score (if it is better). It does not replace a test you didnt take.
ADA Compliance:
If any member of the class feels that he/she has a disability and needs special accommodations of any nature whatsoever, the instructor will work with you and the University's Office of Student Affairs to provide reasonable accommodations to ensure that you have a fair opportunity to perform in this class. Please advise the instructor of such disability and the desired accommodations at the first class attended.
