The Indian University Scholars is a rebirth of an older scholar organization established in 1880. During this year, the original Indian University was formed and a group of scholars known as the Baconians were born. Our inspiration as Indian University Scholars is drawn from our predecessors the Baconian Scholars.
The Indian University Scholars Society is one of the six honor societies on the Northeastern State University Campus.

The leadership activities of this institution will focus on historical and contemporary issues as they affect tribal groups.


Our objectives are:

• To establish partnerships with tribes in order to provide information and
  training required to attain tribal objectives;
• To increase involvement in professional capacities with tribal peoples, incorporating design and implementation of research projects on issues and concerns
  that impact the quality of life for tribal peoples where they reside;
• To study relevant research material of the political and legal participation
  in the tribal sovereignty lecture series;
• To increase involvement in symposia and conferences to enhance understanding
  of sovereignty issues, to negotiate issues and resolve conflicts in a
  neutral atmosphere and location, and to participate in leadership activities
  specifically designed for tribal related issues.

The organization meetings of the Indian University Scholars Society are held every
other Tuesday of each month at 4:00 pm
These meetings are held at The Center for Tribal Studies at the Bacone House.
