Northeastern State University, its College of Business and Industry, and the Department of Marketing and Meetings and Destinations Management recognizing the importance of retailing to the national economy, in the fall of 1996 established a concentration in Retailing.  Special courses were developed, industry contacts were strengthened, student and faculty awareness was heightened, an internship program was initiated, and an outstanding academician was hired to provide leadership in retail education and research.  These steps were taken to prepare students for retailing careers and to provide the retailing community with knowledgeable, realistic and career-focused retailing graduates.

To further serve the retailing industry and NSU students, the College of Business and Industry at NSU established the Institute for Retail Marketing.  The Institute strives to provide excellence in retailing education, retailing research, and service to the retailing community.  The mission of The Institute is to provide student-focused, future-oriented, and nationally- and internationally-recognized educational programs which prepare students for positions of leadership in retailing organizations.  In addition, The Institute is committed to disseminating retailing knowledge and providing educational services to the retailing community.

The Institute for Retail Marketing is dependent upon financial support from the retailing community.  The extent of the Center's activities is determined by the level of support from the community.  The Center would like to thank its three corporate sponsors: Dillards, JC Penney, and Sharpes Department Stores.
