Catalog Description of Course:
The course will give an overview of all areas of exceptionality. Emphasis will be given to the integration of special education efforts into the regular education program.
Major Goals:
1. To present a fundamental knowledge of special education to prospective teachers.
2. To familiarize students with numerous aspects of special education including family, school, and the social environment.
3. To acknowledge definitions, classifications, prevalence, characteristics, causation, prevention, education assessment, and interventions related to numerous special segments of our population.
Expected Course Outcomes:
This course is designed to address the areas of multi-disciplinary views of exceptionality, multicultural and diversity issues, family aspects, early childhood, elementary school years, transition from school to adult life, mental retardation, emotional and behavior disorders. Learning disabilities, mild and/or severe multiple disabilities, communication disorders, autism hearing loss, vision loss, physical and health disabilities, gifted, creative and talented students and individuals. (This outcome relates to addressing all general competencies listed by the State Board of Education Competencies for Licensure and Certification.)
1. Reflect upon one’s won professional practice and develop, implement, and evaluate a professional development plan.
2. Articulate personal philosophy of special education including its relationship to/with regular education
3. Importance of the teacher serving as a model for individuals with exceptional learning needs.
4. Use copyrighted educational materials in an ethical manner.

Instructional Methods of Secondary Students with Learning and Behavior Problems, 4th Edition, Scholss (Secondary majors only)
2. Videos, tapes and handouts will be furnished by the instructor
3. Class will be required to actively participate in class discussions, projects.

All of the following assignments must be completed and turned in on time. Anything not completed, or not turned in within time limits will result in a failing grade or maximum deletion of grade.

Portfolio Assignment:
Competency #13
Students will develop and turn in a formal paper regarding their personal philosophy on how to appropriately educate exceptional children including legal rights and responsibilities of students, parents, and teachers. Details for the Competency #13 rubric will be followed and written using APA guidelines. Failure to submit this assignment will result in an “incomplete” grade in this class.
Student Evaluation of the Course and Instructor:
Instructors are evaluated towards the end of the semester, a minimum of once during most academic years. This will be done anonymously and will be used as a means to improve instruction, course content and the NSU Special Education program. The suggestions, comments, and/or criticisms from students will be taken seriously and hopefully will contribute to the quality of the course and NSU’s Special Education program.

Inclement Weather/ Disaster Policy:
If the university is closed, classes will be dismissed.
