For
this project, you will be able to choose whether you work alone or
in a small group (two preferred). In
order to understand the writing process and collaboration, you (and your
partner) will write/illustrate a short story picture book for children. It
will be important for you to understand the literary elements, so please
refer to your text p. 375-389, or see your Children’s Literature text for
more in-depth information.
Instead
of the traditional 32 page format found in most children’s books, you will
only have as a minimum......9-12 pages of story.Additional
pages are at your discretion, but it is recommended that you plan for a
cover, title page, etc.
The
following page can be used to assist you with your planning. This
story board will help you plan in an organized way to include the literary
elements and have a story that is complete. Most
professional children’s authors use some type of graphic organizer to help
with planning. If you wish to use
a different one or organize in some other manner, feel free to do it.
For
this first attempt, I recommend that you have no more than 4 sentences
per page and be consistent with your sentence length. You
might wish to use the following list of books to assist you. They
have strong characters,
clearly articulated problems, creativity and consistent structure. ( Frog
and Toad Books, Madeline, Corduroy, Babar, Shrek, No Kiss for Mother) There
are many other excellent books, these are just suggestions.
You
(and your partner) will be given some class time, but you may need to plan
outside of class time.Your completed
book is due ______________.You may
illustrate in any media you choose or simply use stick figures.(If
you have access to children, they might assist you.)The
evaluation will be based on the story only. Be sure to develop a cover,
and include all the parts of a good book, including page numbers. You
may use a computer to print the pages, or use your neatest printing.
Sugg:
limit your characters, make them memorable
do
not limit your creativity
clearly
articulate your problem
keep
your intended audience in mind at all times
do
not make your problem too broad
make
your character “survive”
