Catalog Description of Course
The study and practice of writing techniques selected for their effect in helping students improve their ability to write compositions based on their personal experiences and principles of expository writing. Prerequisite: English 0123 if student scores below the qualifying score on the Standard Test of Written English. No major or minor credit.
Course Purpose
The freshman English requirement at Northeastern State University is a two-semester sequence of courses designed to help the student become a better writer, and all assignments will reinforce that purpose. English 1113 will emphasize expository writing. In addition to sentence structure, diction and style, the procedure for taking essay examinations will be emphasized.
Expected Course Outcomes
By the end of the course, the student will be able to:
* show skill and proficiency in constructing an effective essay and other forms
of prose, starting with effective paragraphs and summaries
* use effective word choices and grammatically correct sentences
* recognize the audience’s role in expository writing and the writer’s obligation
toward his/her audience
* display diversity in writing style and purpose
* use the library for basic research
* use a standard writing program, i.e. WordPerfect, on a pc to produce essays

Class Procedures
The expected course outcomes will be realized through a variety of instructional strategies to complement students’ life experiences. These strategies include, but are not limited to the following: expository-discussion, demonstration, inquiry, and group activities.
* Each student must complete every writing assignment and exercise, both inside and
outside the classroom, in an acceptable manner as directed in class. Students will complete at least six 1000 word (four pages) expository essays. Each essay will receive a letter grade.
* Daily Writing (typed for review) required.
* No food, drink, cell phones, pagers, beepers, etc. will be allowed in the classroom.
Assignment Due Dates
Assignments are due at the beginning of the class period on the date indicated when the assignment is given. Assignments must be typed and turned in hard copy (on paper) MLA style.
Attendance
Regular attendance is required. There are no “free” absences. If you have an emergency and are forced to miss a class, I expect you to contact me so we can discuss the problem. Each absence past three will reduce one’s final grade 10% each. When you are absent be sure to contact a classmate as it is your responsibility to be prepared for the next class meeting.
