Human and Family Sciences Education prepares the professional to guide individuals toward finding practical solutions to everyday concerns. Students who wish to become HFS educators take the general HFS courses with alternative certification. Graduates receive a BS in Family and Consumer Sciences. Employment for the Family and Consumer Sciences alternatively certified graduate is not limited to the public school classroom. The professional is provided with many skills that can be transferred to other areas with minimal or no additional training. A degree in HFS provides a broad HFS knowledge base. Career Opportunities· Teacher in middle, junior high or senior high school · Teacher in vocational school · Teacher at military bases in the U.S. and abroad · Coordinator or teacher of adult and continuing education programs · Media specialist · Professional nanny · Extension · Employee trainer · Representative for textbook publisher
Job OutlookThe Spring 1996 Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences forecasts that the "demand for family and consumer sciences teachers and extension professionals by the year 2000 can be expected to be approximately four times the supply of those preparing to enter the field of family and consumer sciences education." There is expected to be a severe national shortage of family and consumer sciences teachers and extension educators. |
