COURSE TITLE AND NUMBER:

MATH 1513 College Algebra

PREREQUISITES:

Placement and enrollment in this course is based on ACT and/or CPT scores, or a combination of ACT and high school grades in mathematics.

CATALOG DESCRIPTION OF COURSE AND COURSE PURPOSE:

Linear and quadratic equations and inequalities; relations, functions, inverse functions; exponential and logarithmic functions; systems of equations; zeros of polynomials and determinants; permutations, combinations and the binomial theorem, as well as other selected topics.

This course provides the mathematical development of the concept of a function, examines the basic types of functions ( linear, quadratic, polynomial, exponential , logarithmic) and provides examples from a wide variety of applications ranging from business to the social sciences as well as in education and the natural sciences. The universal usefulness of this concept in most fields of study is why College Algebra is a required course for most majors.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS: (Required Textbook)

Dugopolski,Mark. College Algebra (Third Edition). Reading, Massachusetts:Addison-Wesley Publishing Company, 2003.

STUDENT PERFORMANCE ACTIVITIES: (Attendance/Punctuality)

Regular class attendance is required. The instructor reserves the right to lower students grade one level for each occurrence of three absences. Plan to get notes and handouts from other students if you are unable to attend a class. Students are not permitted to leave and return to class during a class period. Students who leave or arrive after roll has been taken must notify the instructor. Students are not permitted to bring food or drink to class. No visitors without instructor’s prior consent. The student may seek assistance from the Mathematics Department tutor, SC125B, and/or in Haskell Hall, Room 203.

EVALUATION OF STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT:

Five 100 point exams, including a comprehensive final, will be administered. The comprehensive final exam will be administered during finals week according to the NSU printed schedule. No make-up exams will be administered. Students who miss an exam or exams may count their score on the comprehensive final for one missed exam. Students who arranged their other activities around test schedules and complete each exam when administered will be allowed to replace their lowest exam score with the score on their comprehensive final. Grades will be computed on the following scale:                   A: 90% - 100%

                                                B: 80% - 89%

                                                C: 70% - 79%

                                                D: 60% - 69%

                                                F: 0% - 59%

of the “HIGH” total. The “HIGH” total is found by adding the highest score made on each exam. Students are advised that the last date to drop a course with an automatic “W” , to drop a single class or completely withdraw from NSU is published in the NSU schedule. A “W” or “F” will be assigned depending if the student was passing or failing at the time of withdrawal.

ADA COMPLIANCE:

If any member of the class feels that he/she has a disability and needs special accommodations, please advise the instructor of such disability at the first class attended.
