FACULTY COUNCIL AGENDA FOR FRIDAY, February 5^th 2010

The mission of the Northeastern State University Faculty Council is to promote communication and cooperation among the faculty and between the faculty and the administration.

• The faculty council will meet at 3:00 PM on Friday, February 5, 2010 in (Science Bldg.) SL 129; SYNR 141 and BA-B226.
• [We usually set aside time at the beginning of each meeting to visit with Administrative Officers should they be able to attend.]
• Introduction of Dr. Martin Tadlock, Provost/V.P.A.A. –Topics to be covered by Dr. Tadlock include:
• Organizing a group of faculty to review the promotion/tenure process at NSU and make recommendations for revision of that process that includes guidelines which promote consistency and clarity of expectations across colleges as well as inclusion of a peer review process. (We have already begun the process of developing a committee …)
• Organize a small group of faculty to draft a clear policy and procedure for academic misconduct and make recommendations to Academic Affairs by April 1.
• Select a couple of faculty to serve on a small group with others from technology and student affairs to address the Unauthorized Distribution of Copyrighted Materials guidelines; recommend a process and procedure for NSU in this regard. (Perhaps include Rick Shelton who has previously presented “seminars” on using copyright materials)
• Briefly discuss the UPG (University Planning Group/Strategic Planning process) and Academic Prioritization Process along with any issues Faculty Council wants to address. Dave Kern, chair of the UPG will be available to address questions as well.

Enrollment in online classes – Update from Jym Brittain(?)

• Resolution on Inclement Weather Policy –Appears to have been implemented
• Tenure policy and procedure not followed –see Dr. Tadlock’s comments above

· Circle of Excellence Bricks Location – in progress

· Using Financial Aid to purchase “E” books.

· Academic Prioritization Process

· NEW BUSINESS:

· Tenure-Teaching/Research Tracks – when is selection required – if select research after employment does track time begin then to allow for time to publish?

· Advocate from HR (?) for Faculty/Staff – e.g. on the job injuries…guidance, etc.

· Process and Procedures and Delays in Reimbursement for travel expenses (4 months without ANY communication…)

· Student Evaluations of Faculty and “Don’t Know” – can this be eliminated?

· Finals Schedules/ consistency for all campuses – BA Final scheduling of finals has been inconsistent.

· 16 weeks in a semester – what about night classes being “shorted” on week.

· Student Advising – Transfer Students – who is advising them and regarding what issues? Faculty not trained in all issues related to transfer student issues

· Decrease in English proficiency in foreign students – how this affects DWFs and more importantly WHAT RESOURCES are available to assist students.

· Faculty input on retention decisions related to non-tenure track but long term instructors.
