I'm going to be teaching high school journalism students, but working with these young kids makes me wonder if I'm going into the wrong area. Really though, these five year olds just want attention They want someon they can look up to. They need more role models.
Paula Bliesath, Afton teacher certification student. The service learning program has been rewarding. Working with the special needs kids reenforces how fortunate we are in this world. The kids 500 messes but they are good kids with such big hearts. Spending time with is more fortunate for myself. I really enjoy each kid and their wonderful spirit.
Denise Bond, Tulsa senior.I have never worked with special needs kids and have found it an experience I'll never forget. It's good to know what's going on around us and be aware of the needs and cares of others.
Luanne Cousins, Tahlequah senior.Visiting the pre-k class is the highlight of my week. I build block towers with Dakota and help Jessica make snakes. I sit by Mia during storytime. last week Mrs. Coach taught everyone how to make shadow puppets. The classroom is too small, fights break out they need help.
Trisha Stubblefield. It has opened my eyes to how children really look to adults as role models. A kid ran up to me and said, "I really missed you Mr. Jacobs." That lets me know I'm doing a good serviceto the community when I'm influencing kids in education. Whether I know it or not, I am being a role model for kids to eventually go to college, and if not college, maybe get good grades in public schools.
Jason Dillard, Fort Gibson senior.I am really having fun with this service learning project. I didn't think I was going to like it at first, but it is really fun. the kids help keep me feeling young at heart. Itmakes me want to go back to elementary.
Eric Murray, Tulsa seniorThe service learning project has been an eye opening experience. I haven't been around kids this young since, well, I too was that young. Though I feel often that I am not accomplishing anything while I am at the school, I can only hope that just being there and talking with the kids results in a positive influence in their lives. Though there are some teachers there that treat me like a child (which offends me), my class's teacher (Mrs. Carter) has been nice and helpful.
John Rachal, Dewey junior. This service learning project has been wonderful. I really enjoy spending time with these kids and getting to know them. I hope they are learning as much from me as I am from them.
Jeffery Ingram, Midwest City senior.
