Since 2003, I have taught Rhetorical Theory courses (ENGL 5203 “Rhetorical Theory I,” ENGL 5383 “Rhetorical Theory II,” and ENGL 5173 “Discourse Theory”) in the Rhetoric/Composition track of our MA program. Rhetorical studies continues to be a growing area in English and NSU has one of three graduate programs in Rhetoric in Oklahoma. As Director of Composition in the Department of Languages and Literatures, I have been responsible for training our graduate students who teach ENGL 1113 and ENGL 1213 under our department’s guidance.

The new structure and assignments I have developed for Vision and Voice has become a topic of discussion in one of my own professional venues: the Popular Culture Association (PCA) and the American Culture Association (ACA) during my presentation at the annual Southwest regional conference last year. Having published in both the Journal of Popular Culture and the Journal of American and Comparative Cultures (both academic peer-reviewed journals published by Blackwell). My five publications to date are all rhetorical analyses of how authority (ethos) is constructed in popular American texts. I am now the Area Chair for the Oklahoma panels at the Southwest PCA/ACA Conference.

Last year, five of our graduate students presented papers at the southwest regional conference and one of them won the prize for best graduate student paper analyzing American culture. All five students paid for the hotel and airfare expenses using money raised by the College of Liberal Arts Graduate Student Association (CLAGSA, for which I am faculty sponsor). I have served on my department’s textbook committee, graduate committee, and organized GTA training workshops. I have also served on the NSU Honors Committee (chaired by Anne Davey) and the Commencement Committee (chaired by Bill Nowlin). I am faculty sponsor for CLAGSA, French Club, and the Harry Potter Literary Circle.
