Greatest Accomplishment
George Nigh Rehabilitation Center is a physical rehabilitation hospital with inpatient and outpatient services. In 2009, George Nigh Rehabilitation Center’s ice cream machine broke. The machine was unfixable and the facility could not afford to purchase another machine. After months of hearing the employees and patients discuss how much they missed the ice cream, I decided that something needed to be done. I approached the administrator about coordinating an Ice Cream Machine task force. With her approval, we selected an ice cream machine and determined what our dollar goal should be. $6,000.00! In January of 2010, we began doing fundraisers such as a penny drive, bake sale, yard sale, scrap metal & aluminum can drives, and raffles. By June 2010, we had reached our goal! It is great to see patients, visitors and employees enjoying the soft serve ice cream. But the greatest reward was when I walked through our main dining room and saw an elderly patient eating ice cream with her young grandchildren. At that moment, I realize that it wasn’t all about the ice cream. It was about the quality of time and those conversations that the ice cream brought.
