How does distance learning work?

Instruction for distance learning courses is delivered through media (the Internet or videoconferenced classrooms. You communicate with your instructor and classmates online or by videoconference. Several courses have online discussion boards for enhanced interaction. There are no regularly scheduled classes in online courses so you complete course assignments and requirements at home.

Hybrid or Blended Courses

Hybrid (or Blended) courses are a combination of online and face to face instruction. The courses typically have a course web site, have assignments and communication with the instructor that take place by electronic mail, and have approximately half of the class sessions face to face to further explain course material.

Benefits: Hybrid (or Blended) courses allow students the opportunity to balance the best of two worlds – face to face interaction with their instructor and classmates and the opportunity to experience individualized, student-centered attention while accessing campus resources from home or work.

Online

Online courses allow students to take courses by computer at home, work, or in our computer labs. Each course has a site on the World Wide Web, while assignments and communication with the instructor take place by electronic mail or via a course website. Some Online courses provide an Orientation for students. Additionally, some Online courses meet in person 2 or 3 times during the semester.

Benefits: With Online classes, students meet online during the semester. This gives students the opportunity to experience the individualized, student-centered attention NSU is known for and access campus resources – without having to leave home or rush from work every week.

Videoconference Courses (VC)

Videoconference courses allow students to take courses near home or work through state-of-the-art video technology. Each course is offered at two or more different locations, linked with interactive television technology. You, your classmates, and instructor may be located at different campuses. Attendance is required in scheduled class meetings.

Benefits: With Interactive Television (video conferencing) courses, students choose the site that is most convenient for them. Each site is linked by special interactive technology that allows both groups to participate in real-time classroom activity.
