Book reviews are required of each student in
order
to complete this course. The book(s) will be chosen by the
instructor. When writing the review, you must follow the
appropriate rules of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sentence
structure. Grades will be based on historical/factual content and
literary quality. A maximum of 10 points will be deducted from
your score for composition errors. The report will be graded as
an examination and will be scored on a scale of 100 points. The
makeup rules for examinations apply to the book review. NO NOTES
ARE PERMITTED DURING THE BOOK REVIEW.
Use the following format to prepare your review:
1. Give the proper citation of the book. Example:
McReynolds, Edwin C.
Oklahoma
: A History of the Sooner State . Norman:
University of Oklahoma Press, 1977, 477 pages. (5 points)
2. Write a brief biography of the author. Be sure to
include: place and date of birth and death, if appropriate,
educational background, place of employment, professional experience,
and other works. Information about authors may be found in
The Directory of American Scholars,
various versions of
Who's Who,
Biography and Genealogy Index,
Current Biography,
Dictionary of Literary Biography.
Some authors may have a web site with biographical information. (10
points)
3. In 3-5 sentences identify the scope and thesis of the
book. The scope is the time period encompassed by the book and
the thesis is the purpose of the book. (10 points)
4. Describe the sources used by the author. List three
different examples of primary sources and three different examples of
secondary sources. (10 points)
A. Examples of primary sources include but are not
limited to: contemporary reports, diaries, letters, manuscript
collections, newspapers, government documents, and
oral history. A primary source is an account of events at the
time they occurred.
B. Examples of secondary sources include but
are not limited to: magazine articles, journal articles, and
books. A
secondary source is an account of
events based on primary sources.
5. Write a summary of the book. (55 points)
6. Write your opinion of the book. In 3-5 sentences clearly
indicate whether you did or did not like the book and why.
