How to Get Started

Step 1

Apply for space on the ARAPAHO SERVER
When applying for space, ask to have a directory entitled "My Portfolio"
password protected.

Step 2

The orientation of this website is pretty simple. A list of professional competencies in "COMPETENCIES" provides a template against which you can measure your college experiences. You will be able to create a personal record of situations you have faced, how you dealt with those situations, and how you rate yourself at the particular competencies used. This way, you can keep track of the experience which describes your present best example for each competency.

Your initial best example per competency will serve as a 'benchmark'. Keep updating your competency descriptions as you proceed through your years at Northeastern State University.

Step 3

Although the structure, design and content of your Portfolio will change over time and you will think of different titles or places for things, the following 4 sections are recommended as a minimum: (Click on Personal Marketing Plan for a complete explanation of the assignment and/or the three examples to see previous work done by past students. Keep in mind your assignment might be somewhat different, so don't copy format exactly).

  1. Personal Marketing Plan

  2. KSA (Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes) Logs:

    • Your knowledge log is the place to document your understanding of concepts you are learning in your courses and track your success in meeting learning objectives you have set for your courses and “things” you learn from experiential activities such as work, volunteering, community service, participation in student organizations--whatever you choose to include as a learning experience.
    • Your skills log should reflect your grasp of the skills necessary to succeed both as a student and as a professional. In addition, it should reflect on going self-assessment and goal setting. You should focus on skills you possess, skills you need to acquire, skills you would like to “polish.”
    • Your attitudes log is the place to begin to record your reflections on such things as ethical and professional behavior, being a team player and a team leader, and diversity and intercultural communication and interactions.
  3. A “Fun” Page that tells more about you and your individual interests: information about your home town or home country, your family, your pets, your hobbies, membership in organizations. Whatever you want within appropriate limits.

  4. An e-mail link which will serve as your door to communication with others and to receiving valuable feedback.
