Phagocyte deficiency (chronic granulomatous disease)
AKA:  Chronic Granulomatous Disease of Childhood
  • Most commonly X-linked
  • Affects males
  • Neutrophils lack the "respiratory burst" upon phagocytosis
  • Deficient production of hydrogen peroxide due to deficiency in the H2O2- myeloperoxidase system
  • Patients particularly suseptable to infections by coagulase-positive organisms (such as S. aureus)
