What do you think of when you see this fish? Do you think they live in salt water or fresh water? Many people see Sharks as the most dangerous creature in the ocean, but I want you to make your own opinion. This WebQuest is going to help you observe and determine everything you want and need to know about sharks.

Introduction

Sharks have been roaming our waters for 400 million years. Think about this fact, sharks were around even before dinosaurs! Sharks have always been the hunters of the ocean and are one of the few mammals who have needed little to evolve in the last 150 million years.

In this lesson we are going to learn about shark’s teeth, what times they eat, what sharks like to eat, what kind of sharks there are, and much more! As you search through this WebQuest you get to see both the scary and fun facts about sharks. I want you to visit the websites I give you to observe these amazing and freighting creatures

Learners

The grade level I have chosen for this WebQuest is a 3rd grade science class. We will be focusing on the life science area:

S 2. Each plant or animal has different structures that serve different functions in growth and survival (i.e., the way it moves, type of food it needs, and where it lives).

Prior to this lesson students should know about carnivores, omnivores, and herbivores. Knowing this information will help them already know what sharks like to eat.

Curriculum Standards

The students will begin to observe more about the creatures many of them are interested in. There are many negative feelings about sharks, and I want students to be educated about all the aspect of Sharks and their environment to help change this stereotype.

Life Science Standards Addressed:

  • 1. Plants and animals have features (i.e., breathing structures, limbs, skin covering, seed dispersal, roots, stems, and leaves) that help them live in environments such as air, water, or land.
  • 2. Each plant or animal has different structures that serve different functions in growth and survival (i.e., the way it moves, type of food it needs, and where it lives).

This WebQuest is going to be great hands on learning experience for these students. I want the student’s to talk about what they thought about these creatures before investigating, and then write down what they learned. I would have students complete a KWL Chart to help give them a guide of what they want to know and what they already know. Students will have a variety of websites to look through that will ignite their critical thinking, observation, and teamwork. I want the students to work together and share their information to present to the class. I think giving the students time to draw or write something to be published will be a great way to asses what they learned, and get to know what they thought about this activity.

Process

At the beginning of the class I want to bring in a glass jar with a shark fetus in it to get them hooked. In the hook we will talk about what we already know about sharks, and look through some pictures to see if we can identify some of the sharks without actually research them yet. I then want the students to visit the following websites and investigate and observe more about these creatures.

Website for the students to look through:

http://www.kidzone.ws/sharks/facts.htm This website will be where students can find the answers to some of the questions above. (Ex. shark’s teeth, what times they eat, what sharks like to eat, what kind of sharks there are ect..)

http://www.kidzone.ws/sharks/ This is apart of the first website, but the students will get to chose if they want to look at pictures or participate in the shark activities.

http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/Animals/CreatureFeature/Bull-shark By visiting this website, students will learn about a rare shark that can adapt to both salt water and fresh water.

http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/Animals/CreatureFeature/Great-white-shark By visiting this website the students can learn more about the most dangerous shark, The Great White.

Students will complete the KWL chart and have a discussion after the hook of the lesson. This activity will be completed in one period.
at another school? With a partner in industry or a museum or other entity? Is a field trip designed in as part of the lesson?

Evaluation

30 pts for completing KWL Chart, Reporting to the class, and creating a published piece

20 pts for completing KWL Chart and Reporting to the class.

Anything Below is unacceptable.

Conclusion

In conclusion to the WebQuest students will take the information they have gathered and create something that can be published in the classroom for parents and other classmates to see. The students will have created their KWL charts in their journals.
