I am of Choctaw, Cherokee, and Irish descent, and am a member of the Choctaw nation. I was born and grew up in Durant, Oklahoma, where my family owned a cafe -- a lively center for talk, storytelling, and laughter.
I was educated at Southeastern State College, Oklahoma State University, the University of Utah, and Louisiana State University. I am a professor, a consultant to museums, the originator of video and drama presentations, and the author of nonfiction, fiction and poetry.
Physical disability and my experiences as a woman as well as a Native American have involved me in many advocacy roles. My work has been published in literary journals and national publications.
