How is the Library Organized?

For general information about the library, check the library's home page. Library maps indicate where resources are located. The library hours are also available on the Web. All collections in the library are arranged using the Library of Congress Classification System.

Where can I Locate Information in Books?


International Dictionary of Modern Dance Ref. GV 1585.B46 1998 and The Dance Handbook Ref. GV 1601.R63 1990 have information about different choreographers and dance companies. Dance materials are located in the GV 1580-1799.3 section of the library.  Use the Online Catalog to locate specific books. Other areas include the theater section (PN 1865-1999) and the musical theater section (MT 955-960).

WorldCat is an index to books available from other libraries. Use Interlibrary Loan, described below, to borrow these materials.
 

Where can I Locate Information in Periodicals?

Dance Magazine is available on the second floor until 1998 at the call number GV 1580.D246. Current information is available on Expanded Academic Index.

To locate subjects in magazines or journals, use the Expanded Academic Index. Search by choreographer (last name followed by first name), name of the dance company, title of musical, or jazz dance topic. After locating a relevant article, if it is fulltext, click on retrieve, reformat, and print in the tool bar. For articles not fulltext, do a title search on the name of the journal using the NSU Online Catalog. NSU owned periodicals are located on the second floor of the library by call number. Another useful index is the National Newspaper Index.

Other indexes to try include the Humanities Index (journals) General Reference Center (magazines). Useful subject headings include the following: jazz dance, Musical revues–choreography, dance company names, and choreographers.
 

How do I Acquire Materials not Available at the John Vaughan Library?

As you use indexes, you will locate books and journal articles not available at NSU. Interlibrary loan, which is a service in which the library will borrow these materials from other libraries, is available to all students, faculty and staff free of charge. Please inquire at the Reference Desk located in the middle of the first floor.

Try the library's Search Engine page or the Subject resources page. Remember to evaluate pages located through the Web.
