Green Country Swing

Tulsa Community College (TCC) and Northeastern State University (NSU) invite you to attend our 1st Green Country Swing Tournament.  The tournaments will be held at Tulsa Community College (Northeast Campus) on October 26th through Oct 28th. You will enter through the “joy of tournament” website.  Do not call in or email with your entries, instead use the website: http://www.joyoftournaments.com/ok/green  to record your own TCC entries (1st part of the swing) and the NSU entries (2nd part of swing) in the 2nd section.  This software program will notify you with a summary of students, events, and fees.

The tournament will feature two divisions of debate that will run separate from each other allowing debaters to compete in both forms: NPDA, and IPDA.  In addition we will be offering the following individual events: Poetry Interpretation, Prose Interpretation, Dramatic Interpretation, Dramatic Duo Interpretation, Persuasive Speaking, Informative Speaking, Impromptu, After Dinner Speaking, Communication Analysis, Program of Oral Interpretation, Reader’s Theatre (Saturday only), Radio Broadcasting (Saturday only) and Children’s Lit (Sunday only).

The TCC Northeast Campus is located at 3727 E. Apache (the corner of Harvard and Apache) in Tulsa.  We are located just off Highway 11 just 2 miles west of the Airport.  Registration is in the Student Activities Building on the East side of the campus.  The campus is located approximately 5 minutes from downtown Tulsa.  We have listed hotels in that are located within four miles of the campus.  Most listed are located in downtown, interstate 244, or on highway 169 which runs north and south on the East side of Tulsa.

We are looking forward to hosting this swing tournament and hope to see you on the 26th through 28th of October.

General Tournament Information

IPDA Debates Notes

Again we are offering IPDA “Public Debate” to the Midwest.  It is scheduled to run separately from NPDA, allowing debaters to compete in both debate events. However, if competing in IPDA you will be unable to compete in Flight B events in either tournament. IPDA out-rounds will be held on Sunday. There will be two divisions, Novice and Varsity. If either division does not make they will be collapsed recognizing the top speakers in each category. The IPDA rules can be found at:  www.ipdadebate.org. This is a fun event and we encourage everyone to participate in this form of debate.

IPDA time formats are as followed (No prep time in round – Draw 30 minutes before the round starts)

            1st Affirmative                           5 minutes

            Cross Ex                                  2 minutes

            1st Negative                              7 minutes

            Cross Ex                                  2 minutes

            1st Affirmative Rebuttal             3 minutes

            1st Negative Rebuttal                4 minutes

            2nd Affirmative Rebuttal             3 minutes

Students will first meet at the same location as extemp draw to pick their topic. There will be five topics, with the negative striking one, then the affirmative, then the Neg, then the Aff, and the last resolution will be debated. Students can then use any form of research with prep time lasting 30 minutes. Here is an example of a pre-round resolution sheet.

Sample IPDA Resolutions

1.      RE: Huckabee is the only choice in 2008
2.      RE: Don Imus should never work in radio again
3.      RE: Border policies should be revisited
4.      RE: Iraq is a success
5.      RE: Mexico is a better neighbor than Canada.

Although IPDA is lax on prep materials, no evidence should be brought into the debate round. Use of evidence and common knowledge is similar to NPDA usage.

Judges for IPDA can be lay which include coaches, parents, IE students, Comm. students, anybody outside of high school. IPDA prides itself on having a diverse judging pool so that debaters must adapt to extremely varying paradigms.

IPDA is growing in the region, but has limited availability in the Central States.  It is our desire to help bring this fun event to our students.

NPDA Debate Notes

NPDA will run separate from IPDA allowing students to compete in both debate events. However, students who participate in NPDA will not be allowed to compete in Reader’s Theatre. There will be two divisions, Novice and Varsity. If either division does not make they will be collapsed recognizing the top speakers in each category. Standard times will be used in NPDA format (7,8,8,8,4,5) with 15 minutes prep before the round. Teams are to meet in the rooms and judges will hand out the resolution.

Time limit for Parliamentary Debate:
Prep time = 15 minutes before debate begins
Prime Minister = 7 minutes
Leader of Opposition = 8 minutes
Member of Government = 8 minutes
Member of Opposition = 8 minutes
Leader of Opposition rebuttal = 4 minutes
Prime Minister rebuttal = 5 minutes

Judging:
Each school must provide one judge for each two debate teams entered or fraction thereof, one judge for every 6 individual event entries or portion thereof.  We strongly encourage you to bring the necessary number of judges to cover your obligation.  Judging fees will be $40.00 for each uncovered NPDA team, $20.00 for each uncovered IPDA, $8.00 for each uncovered individual event judge.  Judges are obligated for one round after their team has been eliminated from competition.

Overall Sweepstakes: We shall award sweepstakes trophies to the top three schools.  A school must be entered in both debate and IEs to be eligible to win the overall sweepstakes trophy.
