Consultation Report:

Many people with communication degrees work as consultants for large and small companies.  This assignment allows you to try your hand at consulting with a small or large group.

The Assignment:

Observe an official group meeting (city council, board of regents, faculty council, student organization, a school board, etc.). Be sure the gathering meets the criteria of a group (see your notes if youÕre not sure).  Additionally, you should NOT observe a group of which you are a member.

Your report should have an introduction, body and conclusion:

Introduction—There should be a thesis statement and a preview statement (of your 3-5 points) within the introductory paragraph(s).  If you are missing the thesis or preview, you will not make an A on the paper.

Body—Analyze the interactions of the participants in the form of an essay.  Do not simply go through the agenda.  Instead, focus on 3-5 concepts we have discussed in class and really provide depth with your analysis.  Critically analyze the meeting with information from the in-class lectures and any additional research you have done.  (If you use additional research, be sure to cite the source(s) and attach a reference page).  Give examples from the meeting to provide depth.

Conclusion—In the concluding paragraph(s), be sure to review your main points and focus on the advice you would give the group to improve their meeting experiences.

The paper should at least two FULL pages, double spaced, and written in 12 point Times New Roman.  Margins should be the standard 1 inch.  You will be graded on content and mechanics.  Be sure to proofread or ask somebody else to proofread for you.  Remember, we do have a Writing Lab on the 1st floor of Seminary Hall.
