Award Presentations

Although short (3 minutes max), this speech must be done right to avoid embarrassing people and to avoid misrepresenting the sponsors.

First, when presenting an award, you should refer to the occasion of the presentation.
Next, you should talk about the history and significance of the award.
The final section of the award presentation will be naming the person to whom it has been given. The longest part of this segment is the description of the achievements that contributed to receiving the award.
After you have finished speaking, physically give the award to the winner. Shake with the right hands and present the award (above the handshake) with the left hand.
Practicing beforehand will give you additional confidence in handling the award.

Acceptances

Chances are that if you ever have to give an acceptance speech, it will be impromptu, since you will probably no know that you have won until the award is presented. A fairly simple three-part formula should help you compose a good acceptance speech on the spur of the moment.

First, you should thank the person making the presentation and the organization that s/he represents. It is also gracious to thank a few people who have contributed greatly to your success—but not a long list of everyone you have ever known.
Next, you should comment on the meaning or significance of the award to you. You may also wish to reflect on the larger significance of the award to the people and ideals it honors.
Finally, try to find some meaning the award may have for your audience—people who respect your accomplishments and who may themselves aspire to similar achievements.
